Stapleford Tennis Club

Stapleford Tennis Club Stapleford Tennis Club (STC) is based at the Stapleford Recreation Ground in Cambridgeshire. Welcome to the Stapleford Tennis Club (STC) page.

STC is a relaxed, family-friendly, club based around two all-weather courts at the Stapleford Recreation Ground. Stapleford is a village 5 miles south of Cambridge. The courts have been refurbished by the Parish Council, and re-opened in July 2021 as two artificial 'carpet' multi-user courts with floodlights. Tennis is available every day except Saturday. Non-members can "Pay to Play". Stapleford

Tennis Club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) which means that Members can enter the draw for tickets for the Wimbledon championships. For further information including Membership and Court Booking, visit our website http://www.staplefordtennisclub.org.uk

We have been made aware of a technical problem with the access gate system today - this is affecting all such gates, not just us!

We will contact those who have booked to give them a temporary code, in case the problem has not been fixed by the time their booking comes round.

The PC have planned tree cutting works on Wednesday 24th Feb at the back of the courts. There may be some additional noise as a result. There is no estimated time when this may happen.

We've CANCELLED our usual Friday morning Ladies' Open Session today - not sensible trying to play in Storm Eunice! Stay safe today, everyone.

Another week: we're currently meeting at 11am on Fridays for an hour of social tennis. Non-members always welcome to join us - check the booking calendar if not sure, to confirm when it's on.

Calling our Members or would-be Members aged 35 to 75 and beyond!

Do you fancy taking part in the LTA's National League 'Seniors' Competition? This is a knock out competition regionalised in the early rounds. With the exception of the Over 35s events, all matches are two pair doubles. Events and age categories to be run are:

Men’s – 35, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75

Women’s – 35, 40, 50, 60, 65, 70

Mixed – Junior, Senior, Super Senior and Medley

Knock out rounds begin in April leading to a National Finals weekend held in November.

The Club would be delighted to support any of our Members wanting to take part in this by paying your team entry fees.
**Entries close on 31st January** so get in touch asap if you would like to enter a team, or be matched with other players in your age category to make up a team.

The works to the children's play area [next to the courts] are now complete! Well done to the Volunteer team who led this project and made it happen. While the access strip alongside the MUGA recovers, that bit is roped off; a small area of fresh turf has been laid in front of the MUGA access gate.

Anyone driving to use the courts is advised to park at the Pavilion and walk across from there (rather than parking on Haverhill Road - as there is lots of mud that side!). The bike racks next to the court are now back in use (though please be careful not to block others' access when you park your bike there).

Remember that the tennis courts are bookable online, and open 8am to 9.30pm, 7 days a week. Floodlights will come on automatically for any bookings made after 'lighting up time' - which is currently 3pm. (The lights stay on for 15 minutes after the end of your booking, to allow time to clear the site; they then go off automatically.)

One of the reasons we are able to use the new MUGA at such reasonable rates (it’s half the hourly rate of the nearest equivalent courts) is that Stapleford Parish Council do not have a costly maintenance contract; instead, tasks such as sweeping and clearing the courts are being done by volunteers.

Following user feedback, the Parish Council have now left a couple of brushes on the courts available to use as needed. At last Friday’s Ladies Club session there were five of us, so we all took turns to have a sweep up on Court 1, while the other four played on Court 2. The beautiful Beech tree unfortunately does like to continually drop its nuts at this time of year! But by the end of our session we’d cleared all this lot between us, making the courts lovely for the next users.

The Parish Council do also have a proper sweeping machine for their periodic big cleans, but in between times, all users – whether Members or P2P – are welcome to use the brushes provided to combat the relentless ‘droppings’ from the adjacent trees.

22/10/2021

With apologies for the late notice: we've had to cancel today's planned 2pm "Friday Ladies" session. The courts will of course now be available at that time for anyone who does want to play, to book (whether as a Member, or P2P).

The Friday morning Ladies' sessions at 10am now have a good following, so those will be continuing next week and beyond. The afternoons seem to be more tricky, so we encourage Members to use the private group to arrange playing together at times that suit them.

A change to arrangements for booking the MUGA for Netball or Football: these sports now need to be booked via the Parish Council, and can no longer (for the time being) be booked directly via our Bookings page. Details of how to book are here:

https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/StaplefordTennisClub/MultiSports

The good news is that this now means potentially more flexibility for those sports to happen on different days (not just on the set days first envisaged by the PC), and for tennis lovers, it means no more unused Football or Netball courts restricting your tennis availability.

Following The Parish Council's refurbishment of the old tennis courts into a state of the art MUGA, it is now possible for other sports to book to use the facility. Currently bookings for Football or Netball CANNOT be made via the Clubspark booking system; instead, they must be agreed in advance an...

No Monday Mixed Club Session this evening - called off because of the rain, unfortunately.

That was the last of the pre-planned evening Club Sessions for now. Watch this space for news of any further such sessions from November (i.e., after half term).

14/10/2021

No Friday Ladies sessions tomorrow (15th October), as the courts will be closed for Maintenance - the original contractors are returning to address various snagging issues.

After a wet and very windy morning, we're pleased to see that this evening's weather is considerably drier and a bit calmer. So we will be "under the lights" again from 8.30pm til 9.30pm, ready to welcome all existing Members and any would-be Members to come along for a friendly knockabout. Might even get the odd actual game in if those who come want to do that!
