This week, we had our last meeting.

Children learned about Oware, a traditional game originally from Ghana and widely played in Africa and Asia.

We also celebrated the end of year with some snacks, cakes and fruits.

Thank you to our instructors, volunteers, parents and children who have attended the club and made the club thrive.

We wish you a great summer break and see you again in September!

Dear parents and carers,

If you are looking for some fun activities for your children, our last Junior Chess & Go Club meeting of this term will take place on Wednesday 15th July 2026, from 5.30 till 7pm at St Augustine’s, Richmond Road.

There will be no Chess or Go teaching this week but, for a nice change, children will be taught how to play Oware, a game of strategy involving Mathematical calculation and foresight. It is the national game of Ghana, using pits and pebbles, and has been played for thousands of years across Africa and Asia.

After this week, meetings will resume in September a week or so after the start of the autumn school term.

Summer tournaments: If your child would like to take part in a chess tournament this summer there are two tournaments in Brentwood (Essex):

- On Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August there is a 6 round standard play tournament with two sections (Open & Under 1200) at a rate of 50+10. If you want to play on just one day that is allowed too. Another good opportunity for lower-rated players to get standard play experience.

- And on Saturday 29 August there is a 6 round rapidplay, again with Open and U1200 sections.

For full details of both these events and entry arrangements go to the Events Calendar page of the ECF website and scroll down to the desired date.

Dear parents and carers,

If you are looking for something fun and educated for your children to do, please bring your children to join our Chess and Go Club.

Our Junior Chess and Go Club meeting will take place as usual this week, Wednesday 1st July 2026, from 5.30 till 7pm at St Augustine’s, Richmond Road.

Go teaching is scheduled for the first 30 minutes and we will encourage all children to participate in the teaching session. After that, they will be free to play games of Chess or Go against other children (or against adult helpers if they wish) and we will do our best to see that everyone has someone to play with.

We ask for a payment of £5 per session (in cash) for each child attending to cover the costs of hall hire and insurance.

Please sign the register at the desk and pay the £5 as you come in unless you have paid for the whole term in advance.

We are still looking for parents to fill the position of Chairperson on the Club Committee and for more helper volunteers. Please let us know if you could take on any of these roles.

We look forward to welcoming you and your child/children at this week’s meeting.

Yesterday, we had a mini Go tournament in the club. Everyone who attended got the prizes and one child won the cup! Congratulations!

We hope more children will be encouraged to join the future tournament. It will be great opportunities for children to test their strategy as they compete with other players!

"The Benefits of Chess games in Building Young Minds

If you’re looking for a game that’s fun, engaging, and actually helps your child learn, try Chess and Go! It’s easy to assume chess a just for serious thinkers or future grandmasters, but in reality, any kid can play, and the benefits go far beyond the game board. Chess encourages kids to think ahead, stay engaged, and handle setbacks with confidence. It also strengthens their brains and deepens their connection with others. The best part? They’ll have so much fun; they won’t even realize they’re sharpening their minds." (By Rouaa Ahmed, BSc. Neuroscience Undergraduate Student)

Tomorrow, we will meet up again to learn and play Chess and Go. Please come and join us at St Augustine Hall, Cambridge, 17:30-19:00.
We hope to see you there! 😀
