But what about the energy? ⚡

MVHR recovers heat from extracted air. That's one of its major advantages.

But Paul Harrington, Social Housing Director at Vortice, believes the energy conversation in social housing refurbishment needs to go further.

Drawing on more than 30 years of residential ventilation experience, Paul asks whether theoretical efficiency always translates into the best real-world outcome.

Heat recovery is only part of the picture.

Electrical consumption, servicing, filters, maintenance, installation complexity and actual long-term system performance all need to be considered.

A system can perform brilliantly on paper — but it still needs to be correctly installed, balanced and maintained throughout its life.

Congratulations to Paul Harrington on celebrating three fantastic years with Vortice!

As our Social Housing Sales Director, Paul has brought a wealth of experience and knowledge from the ventilation sector to the team. Throughout his time at Vortice, he has completed countless training sessions and continues to share his expertise, helping educate and support colleagues across the business and ensuring we all have a deeper understanding of ventilation and the challenges faced within the social housing sector.

Paul has also played a key role in the launch and success of F4L – Fan for Life. Drawing on his experience and first-hand understanding of the common issues faced across the social housing sector, Paul helped shape a product designed to address those challenges and provide practical solutions. His input, knowledge and industry insight have been invaluable in helping make F4L the success it is today.

The 1960s building problem 🏢

A recent live refurbishment project involving a typical 1960s tower block prompted Paul Harrington, Social Housing Director at Vortice, to revisit an important question.

Should we design the building around the ventilation system — or the ventilation system around the building?

Drawing on his extensive experience of residential ventilation and social housing refurbishment, Paul highlights the realities of working with existing buildings.

The structure already exists.
Room layouts are fixed.
Service risers are already there.
Ceiling voids are predetermined.
Kitchen and bathroom locations can't simply be moved.

These constraints can fundamentally change what's practical.

So instead of starting with “How do we install MVHR here?”, Paul argues we should start with:

“What ventilation strategy does this building actually need?”
