Burnley United Ladies were left frustrated after a dominant performance against Lostock St Gerard’s ended 1–1, with a late freak goal denying the hosts all three points.
Burnley controlled much of the first half, moving the ball well, building patiently and creating a number of chances while remaining largely untroubled defensively.
The breakthrough came after the interval through Nik Brogden, who put her body on the line to force the ball home in a performance full of aggression, commitment and determination.
Burnley continued to look the more likely side, but a freak late equaliser saw Lostock sn**ch a point. Their manager later admitted his side had “got away with one” and praised Burnley’s hospitality and facilities.
There were still plenty of positives for Burnley, particularly the effort, discipline and quality of their build-up play.
Players’ Player of the Match was shared by Brogden and Ruth Hopton, who continued her strong pre-season form with another assured display at centre-back.
Manager’s Player of the Match went to Amy Melvin, who was a constant threat in attack throughout.
