Pay attention to this guy! He helped shape what it means to be a yoga teacher....(to me!)

Despite being a qualified yoga instructor for the past 9 years I have spent the past 2 years in a state of geographically and spiritually un-mentored self practice and have unfortunately adopted a few bad habits along the way... Repetition of comfort, avoidance of discomfort, allowing the ego to reign, whilst navigating chronic autoimmune illness amidst two surgeries... BUT... All wasn't lost - Every teacher needs a teacher and both are eternal students. Here are my thoughts...

This morning I returned to the roots of my personal Rocket Yoga journey by resuming practice under the guidance of my instructor, Jason in Plymouth. Having trained under some of the most renowned internationally recognised teachers, and spent the past 4 months away on his own Ayurvedic learning journey, Jason's credentials are far reaching and you can check Jason out here (Plymouth).

Jason is one of a few practitioners (in my experience of this geographic area) to gently incorporate the eastern philosophies of yogic principles into his classes and relate such teachings to the modern experience. This is the part I have truly missed from my personal practice and I am so blessed to have been reminded of it today - it's what happens off the mat that matters... And where the wind blows us ✨

Thank you here is to blissfully yielding to the practice of yoga in ways we aren't always able to achieve alone πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸš€βœ¨

I FAIL. All the time! 😊

First Attempt In Learning innit!

Growth doesn't come from finding things easy, nailing a posture first time, seamlessly transitioning with feather-like grace. It comes through the quiet consistency of effort, identifying the personal deficits without self-condemnation, learning the drills, understanding the power of 'not yet' ... And being brave enough to not get it first, second, nor after multiple attempts! Every day is different: it's a practice, not a perfect πŸ™ŒπŸΌβœ¨πŸš€

The many (many!) forward fold variations of the Ashtanga Primary series, and also Rocket sequences, are not merely passive postures to lengthen the hamstrings - they are the roots of understanding and the foundations for building the core compression required for any arm balance or inversion that comes later on. More on that to come... πŸš€πŸ™ŒπŸΌβœ¨

Two months today post-surgery, two-ish weeks out of the aircast boot... Wasn't sure how long it would take to get back to handstand drills, let alone holds, but grateful to be here! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸš€βœ¨

Four days free of 6-weeks in the aircast boot following foot surgery and finally back on the mat. Keeping in mind the first limb of Ashtanga - the Yamas, and the first consideration of the Yamas - to do no harm, to self or otherwise. Today felt tentative, but joyful πŸ™ŒπŸΌβœ¨πŸš€

Trying to restore proprioceptive feedback in Franken-foot with banded assisted Spanish squats... my sense of balance is completely shot πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈDaily pilates and home workouts keeping me sane throughout recovery! πŸ™ŒπŸΌβœ¨πŸš€

And here it is... The reason for the lengthy delay establishing rocket yoga classes in Bude - the need for corrective surgery on my foot. It's done πŸ™ŒπŸΌ I'm thankful πŸ™πŸΌ I'm looking forward to exploring the 7-lesser known limbs of Ashtanga yoga through this second recovery, delving a little deeper into adaptive Asana practice and Patanjali's Sutras along the way... πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸš€βœ¨

Despite eating half my bodyweight in delectable cheese yesterday I was delighted to haul myself into any form of floats today 🀣 be gentle on yourselves even more than usual today folks, and remember any motion is lotion for the body! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸš€βœ¨

Eka pada bakasana (one-legged crow) where to begin... πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

As with most arm balances it's really hard (and still a work in progress for me!) Harder all the more so with an off-set centre of gravity, legs doing different things, and a realistic chance of falling - definitely recommend using a wall when starting out and practicing on a forgivingly soft surface... As always the breath (steady), the bandhas (locked) and the drishti (forward of the hands) play key parts as well as balance proprioception - understanding where your body is and what it's doing in space and time. Practice kakasana/ bakasana, get confident with both knees on the back of your arms, then start to explore by having a wall behind you to rest the floating leg onto when transitioning to single leg support on either side. Do your practice, all is coming... πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸš€βœ¨

Holding the inverted L-sits doesn't get any easier! Sandwiching handstand drills between leg and core work to make working out a little more fun and a lot more bearable today - it's not just your practice, you've got to train the drills! πŸ™ŒπŸΌπŸš€βœ¨
