FRILUFTSLIV - which literally translates as "free-air life" - seems to hold the key to Norwegian happiness and in reality it means spending time outdoors as well as a spiritual connection with nature.
This love of nature is taught early in Norway with toddlers spending 80% of their time outside.
Friluftsliv is beneficial to physical health because it often involves exercise, but the mental benefits are just as important. Studies show that being in green spaces helps reduce anxiety and improve cognition. Being social with others while appreciating nature is another important aspect of friluftsliv.
