Grandmaster Christopher Davies recently returned from Seoul, South Korea, where he represented the UK as part of an 8-person Chungdokwan team at a significant international competition Korea at the United Nations Korea Association World Peace Taekwondo Championships, promoting peace through martial arts.

Held at the Kukkiwon — the official World Taekwondo Headquarters and widely regarded as the Mecca of Taekwondo — the event was a special occasion for the United Nations Korea Association World Peace Championships and the World Chungdokwan Federation.

Grandmaster Davies is no stranger to Korea or the Kukkiwon, having travelled there many times over the years for advanced training and high-level testing. His deep connection to the birthplace of Taekwondo made this championship all the more meaningful.

The event attracted competitors from over 20 nations, and the UK team delivered an exceptional performance, finishing 2nd overall in the team standings. Grandmaster Davies led by example, winning a gold medal in his individual poomsae category, while the team secured an additional 3 silver and 3 bronze medals across various poomsae divisions.

This achievement highlights both the strength of Chungdokwan and Bristol Taekwondo on the international stage and the top-class instruction available in Kingswood through Grandmaster Davies’ teaching. His continued dedication serves as an inspiration to students and martial artists across the community.

Prepare yourselves for the Workforce Governance and Registration Register

With support from DCMS (Government Department for Culture, Media & Sport) UK Sport and Sport England have been working with (CIMSPA) the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, to create a Workforce Governance and Registration register whereby ALL sports and physical activity coaches/instructors will need to be registered. This will require that all coaches and instructors are appropriately trained and qualified to be coaches in their sport/art.

The reason for this is the totally unacceptable levels of physical harm or injury, abuse and discrimination that is occurring in sport. In the UK, studies (such as Alexander et al., 2011) have shown the prevalence of emotional-psychological abuse of children in sport to be as high as 75%, with 24% of young people surveyed reporting physical abuse of some form.

CIMSPA is working with National Governing Bodies and other stakeholders to be inline with the government strategy for the future of sport and physical activity. My understanding is that to be on the register you will need to apply through your sports National Governing Body which in the UK for Taekwondo is the British Taekwondo Council.

The potential fall-out for not being on the register and having the correct qualifications could be that an instructor might not be granted permission to teach in Sports Centres, Schools, Community Centres and public authority premises or able to obtain insurance cover as the insurance industry is also being engaged with to get on board with the project.

The British Taekwondo Council’s mandatory Instructor Course, safeguarding course and other training and policies should go a long way into providing BTC instructors the qualifications required to be on the Workforce Governance and Registration register.

I am not sure of the timeframe for full implementation but many National Governing Bodies are now making preparations for this.

The UKTDC and its instructors are Kukkiwon / WT stylists and are members of the BTC so will be OK if and when this is implemented as we have much of the training and qualifications likely needed.

Find out more about this sector-wide work to support the workforce to allow everyone taking part in sport and physical activity to enjoy safe and high-quality experiences.
