Being direct and being demeaning are not the same thing.
You can have high standards, challenge people and hold someone accountable when something hasn’t been done properly.
None of that requires making somebody feel small.
People are far more likely to speak honestly, take ownership and raise problems early when they know they’ll be treated with respect.
That doesn’t make you soft.
It makes you a better manager.
And being under pressure is no excuse for bad management.
