We often treat anxiety as a mental loop, a stream of racing thoughts, constant "what-ifs," or looming dread. But the root of anxiety often lives in the nervous system, not just in your thoughts.
When your body senses a threat, whether physical, emotional, or relational, your nervous system activates a survival response: fight, flight, or freeze. If that threat is ongoing or overwhelming, the survival energy can become trapped.
How this trapped energy manifests physically:
・ Chronic Tension: Tightness in the neck, shoulders, or jaw.
・ Respiratory Shifts: Shallow breathing or a persistent feeling of being "on edge".
・ Digestive Feedback: Physical signals through the gut and nervous system.
・ Sensory Overload: Feeling "wired but tired" and unable to enter a state of true rest.
The body remembers what the mind forgets. Somatic awareness isn't about analyzing what is "wrong"; it is about learning to listen to these signals with curiosity. By tracking physical sensations like heat, tightness, or pressure, you can teach your system that it is finally safe to complete the stress response and return to a state of calm. Reconnecting with your body is a gentle process that prioritizes your capacity and readiness to engage.
At The Somatic Therapies Centre, we offer trauma-informed, body-based care to help you navigate these patterns and move toward regulation.
