The designs have been released for the next stage of the A259 cycle route. You can see them by going to the page linked in the comments, clicking on the 'public consultation' link then clicking on the link to the 'technical drawings.pdf' near the bottom of the page.

As promised back in 2024, this scheme moves the westbound lane from the road back onto the pavement area between West Street and Forth Avenue, with the removal of the orange wands to separate cyclists and drivers.

The new bi-directional lane will be to the latest design standards - at least 3m wide - enough for cargo bikes to pass each other. There are sections where the buffer zone between the parked cars and the cycle lane is only 0.9m but this is still an improvement on the 0.6m buffer we'll see west of the King Alfred. The plans mention a 75mm kerb at the edge of the lanes - we hope this will be a 'soft' kerb.

An obvious concern is that this redesign introduces a lot of new parking on the seafront, which will increase congestion, pollution, noise and make crossing the road harder, but the council do rely on the additional revenue to balance their books. The scheme also changes some sections from a single lane to two lanes in the same direction, which can increase vehicle speeds and again make crossing the road more dangerous.

⚠️ Saltdean Undercliff path closure

From Monday 7 September, the undercliff path will temporarily end at the Brighton & Hove City Council boundary for around four weeks to allow for essential sea defence maintenance and the construction of an undercliff kerbed planter.

The planter will increase biodiversity with vegetated shingle plants and will provide some protection against falling chalk and stones by keeping path users away from the cliff base.

Warning signs are in place to advise where the path is closed for these essential works to take place.

We’re also seeking views on a proposed outdoor calisthenics gym at East Saltdean Undercliff. Take the survey by 14 September using the link in the comments.

Money for traffic-free route between Uckfield and Lewes

Major works on Western Road are set to begin 28th September which will include adding the red route to hopefully prevent the epidemic of illegal and dangerous parking that the road currently sees.

A public meeting on the subject chaired by Cllr Ollie Sykes will be held on Tuesday the 8th of September at the Cornerstone centre at 7:00 pm.

Brighton & Hove is once again marking Cycle to Work Day this year, on Thursday 6th August, the UK's biggest annual celebration of cycle commuting.😀
