Exeter and District Basketball
Bridgwater Blackhawks 2 VS Torbay Tigers 2
Friday evening we welcomed Torbay Tigers 2 to our home court in the Exeter District League, one of the two leagues we’re competing in this season. With it being a cup fixture, there was plenty on the line as both teams looked to secure progression to the next round.
This was our first game back on home soil for a number of players after the Christmas break, with a mix of lads returning from injury and others finally able to make a Friday night fixture. Despite that, we started the game well, moving the ball nicely and trying to establish some early rhythm on offence.
However, Torbay quickly disrupted that with their aggressive full-court and half-court pressure. Their defence forced us into rushing possessions, leading to uncharacteristic turnovers and a number of costly mistakes at both ends of the floor. What initially felt like a positive start soon turned into a frustrating spell, with focus errors creeping into our defensive play as well. It began to feel like one of those nights where nothing was going our way.
Shots from beyond the arc—something we normally rely on and convert consistently—just refused to drop. Even good looks weren’t falling, and as the game went on it became clear that this wasn’t going to be a free-flowing offensive performance.
The match developed into a scrappy contest from start to finish, with plenty of stoppages and whistles. That was largely down to the intensity of a cup game, where neither team wanted to give an inch or risk elimination. Fouls began to stack up on both sides as pressure defence, rushed decisions, and tired legs led to more contact than usual.
A real turning point came when we brought some of our younger players into the game. They injected much-needed energy, lifted the tempo, and sparked the bench into life. That energy translated into effort on the defensive end, where we began to string together stops, which then led to quick fast-break opportunities. Those transition points allowed us to build momentum and eventually create some separation on the scoreboard.
It certainly wasn’t our most polished performance as a group, but it was a strong example of digging deep and finding a way to win when things aren’t clicking. Sometimes basketball is about grinding out results, and tonight was exactly that.
Huge thanks to all the lads for giving up their Friday evening and committing to the game. A solid team effort, and most importantly, we move on to the next round.
Well played to Torbay Tigers 2, and thank you for making the trip.
Next up, we shift focus back to the Somerset League, with a very busy month of fixtures ahead for the club.
