Match Report
Broadlands got their double-header off to the perfect start with a hard-fought and entertaining victory over Taffs Well in today’s league clash.
The home side couldn’t have asked for a better opening. Inside the first minute, Katie Richards produced a perfectly weighted through ball to send Macey James racing clear on goal. Although her initial effort was saved by the Taffs Well goalkeeper, Macey reacted quickest to slot home the rebound with confidence and composure.
Buoyed by the early breakthrough, Broadlands kept up the pressure and soon doubled their lead. Winning a free kick from around 30 yards, captain Mo stepped up and struck a powerful effort. While the shot was straight at the keeper, it proved too hot to handle and slipped through her grasp, making it 2–0 to the hosts.
Broadlands continued to dominate through determination and relentless work rate, forcing multiple saves from the visiting goalkeeper. However, Taffs Well began to grow into the game around the 20-minute mark, with Rhianne Jones proving particularly influential. She caused consistent problems down the left flank and was rewarded when she latched onto a well-placed pass and fired an unstoppable strike past Sheldon in goal.
Despite the setback, Broadlands remained composed. Solid defensively and still dangerous on the counter-attack, they absorbed the pressure from their opponents and held firm to secure the win and claim the first three points of the double-header.
Credit to both sides for a competitive and spirited contest, with Macey James standing out for her energy, movement, and constant threat throughout the match.
Match Report – Game 2
Broadlands put in another committed performance in the second fixture of the double-header but were ultimately edged out by a strong Taffs Well side.
Playing conditions proved challenging, with the wind a significant factor and making it difficult for Broadlands to build from the back. Taffs Well started brightly and carried that momentum into the early stages. Their pressure paid off around the 20-minute mark when a well-delivered corner found Jasmine Chase, who powered a header in at the near post to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
Despite the setback, Broadlands showed resilience and determination, competing well across the pitch and looking dangerous on the counter-attack. Chances came, but the Taffs Well goalkeeper stood firm to keep them at bay.
The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute. Macey James produced another driving run from midfield, breaking through on goal before calmly sliding the ball through the keeper’s legs to level the score at 1–1 and set up a tense finale.
However, Taffs Well responded strongly. On 80 minutes, Mara Costello picked up possession in what appeared to be a harmless area, beat her defender, and struck a looping effort that sailed over the keeper to restore the lead at 2–1.
Broadlands continued to battle, but a contentious sequence involving a corner and a disputed drop-ball decision led to a decisive third goal. Costello delivered an inviting cross that was met by Rhianne Jones, who finished from close range to seal the result for Taffs Well.
Late substitutions from Broadlands nearly made an impact, but it wasn’t to be, as Taffs Well secured the win in the second game.
Credit to Taffs Well for a strong all-round performance. Broadlands were fantastic, with a well earned 3 points and can take positives from their effort and attitude and will look to finish the season strongly in their final two fixtures.
