We started the day with a competitive 1-1 friendly with our neighbours Ladybridge with stand out performances from Harry and Josh.

The lads then went down to Hollywood bowl for virtual darts and bowling, where they had a blast with some unusual names making the scoreboard in bowling 🤣🤣🤣

Then it was back to the clubhouse for a BBQ and the presentation.
The coaches would like to publicly thank all the parents and kids for this season in what we think has been a hugely successful season.

A special thank you to Andrew and Leigh for the bbq, Jemma and Linzi for organising the presentation and Gregg for filling in at training when asked.

Match day 2nd May

Horwich locomotives vs Ladybridge Leopards

Today we welcomed Ladybridge to Scholes bank for the last game of the season. The locomotives were going into the game full of confidence and good form having lost only 1 of the previous 8 games so everyone was looking to finish on a high. The opposition were coming hear with an upturn in form and knowing a win could leapfrog the locomotives come the final standings but above all the derby day rivalry was evident amongst the players and coaches so the message was clear work hard and get your rewards.

Kick off: Away we went in front of a big crowd as is often the case on the last day of the season especially as ticket prices were reduced and there was an incentive on coffee and bacon.

The locomotives started brightly and the better of the 2 teams with good work down the right hand side causing Ladybridge problems. The home side settled well on the ball and looked to find the easy pass and keep the ball moving from back to front however any real chance in front of goal was becoming elusive as the home side couldn’t test the keeper from the early pressure. It’s fair to say against the run of play the visitors opened the scoring. A dangerous corner was headed home in the 19th minute as the locomotives failed to mark the box well enough something that has been an Achilles heal this season and I’m sure the coaches have ear marked as an area to improve both defending and attacking. 0-1.

Ladybridge were looking to build on their advantage before the locomotives could respond however it was the home side who found the perfect response 2 minutes later.
A long throw from Tom which has been a real weapon all season was headed out by the defender, however Fynley was on hand to react first and sweep home a half volley which looped over the keeper for his 8th goal of the season to draw level and stifle any pressure the away side wanted to build. From that important moment there was only 1 team in it as the locomotives orchestrated a truly memorable match.

Half time: locomotives 1-1 Ladybridge

Into the second half and the early pressure came from Ladybridge with a couple of early corners however, Connor was there to command his area and under pressure dealt with the threat expertly. Moments later the locomotives created their first chance of the second half as the ball was played into the path of Blake who fired narrowly past the post.

GOAL: it was coming!! A long ball played up from the back towards the ever present Sam. Sam showed great strength to hold off his marker and real composure to flick the ball in to Harry who was making a good run in behind. Work to be done, but Harry muscled his marker off and raced through one on one he made no mistake finding the bottom right corner to give the locomotives the lead.

More pressure was building as Josh worked the left hand side with some good skill and cut in on his right foot and had an effort go just past the far post. The locomotives could sense the game was their for the taking and give the home fans what they wanted a derby day win.

GOAL: oh my word he’s got another. The locomotives continued to play in the final third and some neat football in the Ladybridge box was eventually cleared out only to find Logan who was itching to get involved higher up. His first time drive back into the mix was creatively diverted into the back of the net by Harry to put the locomotives 3-1 up. Limbs in the home end as the traditional end of season fancy dress was on full show but the boys wanted to deliver more for them.

GOAL: unbelievable Geoff!! This has to go down as a tremendous team goal. Sadly the sky sports coverage failed us second half with a technical error resulting in the camera never moving to the right!!! However the locomotives were moving further away from their rivals. The locomotives won the ball back in the centre and moved it to the left. Josh and Sam played a delightful one- two with each other only this time Josh played a lovely cross into the heart of the box where Harry got across his man and slotted home from close range for his 35th goal of the season and another Hat trick for the record books.

The locomotives were not done there though as more good play down the right hand side delivered another good cross which was cleared to the edge of the box GOAL! What a hit. Tom picked up the loose ball and decided to have a strike it found the back of the net for his 16th goal of the season as the keeper never moved. A goal he deserved with an ever present driving force in midfield.

The final whistle blew to the relief of the away team and drew an end to the season.

MOTM. Went to the whole team today as it was arguably our best performance of the season.

We close the season out with some real positive performances and results and I’m sure we can all catch up during the presentation on how the season went as a whole for the team but what’s has been ever present is just how much they improve each season and how much enjoyment they give us parents as we are all proud of our own and all the boys week in week out.

Many many thanks to the coaches for their continued support and guidance and it’s just a shame we don’t get to see them freezing cold in the reservoir this year and a lucky escape for Greg as I think he was parents choice to help out🤣

Match day

Horwich locomotives vs Bury FC B

Today we welcomed Bury Fc B to Scholes bank on a beautiful sunny morning looking to end the season in good form. The away fixture saw one of our best performances of the season so the boys knew they needed to be right at it to compete. With the coaches away on international duty Greg and Paul were named as interim managers for the first time this season and were looking for a performance they could be proud of.

The game kicked off and from the first whistle both sets of fans new they were going to be in for a good game of football as both teams settled early on the ball and showed some real quality in and out of possession, and as ever this season playing in the top league small margins will matter. The first chance fell at the feet of Bury as the striker was played through 1 on 1 with the Connor but he stood up well and made the save. Moments later the locomotives responded with their first chance of the game as a shot from Harry came back off the post. 2 early warning signs from both teams showing they could break the lines. As the half went on the locomotives carved out another chance with some battling work down the right by Fynley supported by Jack eventually working the ball to Tom on the edge on the box but his effort was close but just over the bar. The resulting goal kick saw a long ball played up pitch and somehow eluded everyone and ran into the path of the bury striker who again found himself 1 on 1 with Connor. This time he showed good composure and rounded the keeper and slotted home the first goal of the game to make it 1-0 to Bury.

Bury’s confidence grew however the locomotives showed great desire to get back into the game quickly and that’s exactly what they did before bury could capitalise. Excellent work in the middle of the park and good link up play created a through ball to Harry who ran through 1 on 1 with the keeper and the locomotives top scorer made no mistake and found the back of the net to draw the game level at 1-1. What was a really enjoyable first half the best chance before the break fell right at the end as the locomotives found Harry again with a through ball but this time his effort was saved by the keeper to keep the scores level at the break.

Into the second half and the game was on a knife edge as both sides looked to break each other down with a variety of good play, however half way through came a pivotal 4 minutes. Bury managed to earn themselves a corner, a great ball in sadly wasn’t dealt with and the ball bounced off a couple of Horwich players and into our own net for an unfortunate own goal. This time Bury did capitalise quickly and before the locomotives could get back into in they found themselves 2 goals to the good with a low shot from the left hand side finding the bottom corner and the score suddenly was locomotives 1-3 Bury.

On balance of play the game wasn’t done and the locomotives had belief they could get back into in. 2 massive saves from Connor in goal one being an unbelievable double save kept the scoreline the same with both sets of fans and coaches applauding Connor’s brilliance. It gave the locomotives a platform to build off and a great strike from Fynley on the edge of the box after a locomotives corner was cleared could easily have found the back of the net as the keeper made a save with his feet without knowing too much about it. Moments later Harry had a terrific header just go past the far post when it looked destined for the back of the net.

At the other end of the pitch Logan, Joe and Sam were staying strong in 1 on 1 duels and limiting bury to half chances but the locomotives needed a bit of magic. That magic came in the name of Josh who was having a great game carrying the ball up the pitch and showing real composure dribbling past players. With 8 minutes remaining he found the ball at his feet on the left hand side. He carried the ball towards goal and then what has now been labelled the “Josh” turn took out 2 maybe 3 Bury players in one bit of skill. He cut in past another defended and saw his low effort find the bottom left corner for the goal of the day to bring the locomotives back to within 1. With time running out the locomotives threw everything at the away team with efforts from Harry, Blake and Tom. The referee blew the final whistle and Bury had hung on for the 3 points when many would feel a draw would have been a fair result but that’s football.

It was a great game and some excellent football on show from both teams and a real example of how the team have developed this season as we head into our final game next week before our preseason tour of the pubs.

Charnock Richard

Venue : Horwich St Mary’s (Hallowed Ground).

After a lengthy break the lads faced off against Charnock Richard, a team who we have had mixed results with over the last few years. This would be an opportunity to dust off any cobwebs and have a final push for the last few games of the season.

This reporter apologizes for any lackluster reporting , he is still suffering from Island Life Syndrome where the motto of late has been “No Stress”.
The match started and the lads went about their business with a vigor, trying to feed Fynley down the right , Harry was trying find his rhythm in the centre and Josh kept on flying down the left. From a defensive point of view the boys fought for the second balls and looked to string passes together with the midfield. It was end to end with both teams having very few chances and any chances went wide or over the cross bar. Charnock Richard tried to find the back of the net but good clearance and great team work at the back held them at bay.

Half Time : 0-0

The second half started and the lads continued to shake off the cobwebs. Sadly Charnock Richard found themselves in a one on one situation with Connor and found themselves 1-0 up. The lads kept on challenging, looking for a gap but their keeper was having a fantastic day in the office. It was going to take something special to equalize. And that’s just what happened with seconds to spare. In fact the goal was that Mesmerizing that this reporter missed who scored it 🫢.

The game ended 1-1 however once again the lads didn’t give up. They dug deep and their heads did not drop.

Match report 21st March 2026

Horwich locomotives vs Moss Bank

Today we returned to Scholes bank looking to extend our good form and cement our place in the top 4 going into some final crucial games of the season. We welcomed Moss Bank who are no strangers to the locomotives and their league positions suggests they have had a difficult season, however football has a funny way of reminding the players you take nothing for granted, so the message was to start strong and stay on the front foot.

Kick off began and the boys enjoyed some good early possession looking to move the ball around with confidence as it zipped off the morning dew surface. They were enjoying good success in first contact with duels being won all over the pitch however an early warning sign was Moss Bank had come with a formation of playing 2 up top keeping our defenders honest to the task. The first 10 minutes brought about little threat to both keepers with most of the action being contested in the middle of the park. This was about to change, in the 13 minute Harry intercepted a goal kick and held of his man getting the ball out of his feet and firing a right footed shot low and hard to the bottom right hand corner to open the scoring for the locomotives. A trademark finish from our top goal scorer who is on course for the golden boot award.

Moments later a strong and quick run from Ben from the centre of the pitch saw his effort rise over the bar and 5 minutes later he was pulling strings again playing a perfect pass through the lines into Fynley who drove down the right and had a right footed effort flash past the far post as the locomotives looked to extend their lead.

Moss Bank were fighting for territory though and they managed to gain themselves a free kick within shooting distance. A good free kick brought an excellent save from Connor diving down to his right hand side to keep them out. Confidence grew for the away side and they looked to catch us on the counter attack with the 2 strikers often having a 2 on 1 scenario however Sam stood up to the questions being asked of him and shut them out whilst the cavalry sprinted back. A slight reminder from the coaches about being disciplined in our positions would combat this going into the second half.

Into the second half and it was very much the same patterns of play. The midfield often dominated the play and looked to break the lines or play into the channels with the confidence that Jack, Joe, Logan and Sam were having a strong game in defence. Shots from Jack and Josh missed the target as the locomotives could not find that bit of quality to test the keeper again, however after some good play from Jack down the right and Fynley keeping it alive when the ball looked to have been going out. He played a nice pass into Tom who had picked up trademark position just inside the box. A lovely bit of composure which was required saw him take a touch and not rush his shot resulting in a right footed shot finding the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

The locomotives continued to work hard and search for another goal which would seal the victory and they worked the ball out well from the right hand side over to the left finding Josh. With several options available Josh made the most of the situation. Some great skill and desire to drive forward he found himself through on goal 7 yards out. A right footed shot with the outside of the boot found the bottom right hand corner and the locomotives had their third and looked on course for another win.

A lapse in concentration and with the locomotives being guilty of taking their foot off the gas Moss Bank played a long ball up field into the final third which gave them a one on one situation. The player managed to find the back of the net to reduce the deficit to 3-1 however that was the last action from the away team.

The locomotives finished strong looking after the ball and a final chance fell to Blake who’s left footed effort was a bit too high. The last action came with a strong penalty appeal for the home side however the referee saw it fitting to bring the game to a close rather than award the penalty.

Match Report 14th March 2026
HSM U12 Locomotives vs Bridgewater

Glorious sunshine glistened on the treasured green grass as we matched up at home vs Bridgewater. This was our first match at home in quite some time and the hallowed ground felt good under foot.
With a mediocre result the week before vs Turton it was important that the lads reset and got back to “business as usual.” At training and before the game the coaches spoke enthusiastically about the lads giving their all , winning those second balls , and not giving the opposition any time on the ball.

The first whistle blew and the game was under way. Despite Bridgewater struggling this season it was clear they had come to prove a point. Within the first few minutes the boys struggled to settle and were unable to string any passes together which would have led to chances. The call from the sideline was the they needed to up their game. With a cross from the right by Harry the ball fell to Tom whose shot sadly went wide. This was an early sign of promise. Sam was brought down just outside the box and he stepped up to take the freekick. He rounded the wall however the keeper managed to make the save.

Bridgewater kept on pressing and a few times Connor had to come of his line to make a clearance. The defence and the midfield worked tirelessly to find a breakthrough. Harry opened the score for the Loco’s. He kept a cool head in front of goal and his shot found the bottom corner. Tom too wanted in on the action and his shot not long thereafter was saved by the keeper.

We went into half time with a 1-0 lead but this game was far from over.

The second half started with the fans rushing back to their seats. The sun continued to shine on those that had come from far and wide. The boys knew that they needed to dig deep to ensure a win was secured. Bridgewater continued to challenge. Tom fed a fantabulous through ball which was expertly timed and received by Fynley and he too found the back of the net. Tom had a shot not long thereafter which sadly went wide and moments later Bridgewater were on the attack. Some strong chasing and defending from Joe nullified the threat.

Another shot from Harry went over and not long after that he very nearly found the back of the net from a freekick however his header went wide. Once again Bridgewater came back at us and a one on one with Connor found him making a save. Things were getting heated and tempers started to flare. A freekick to them found them finding the back of our net , 2-1 it was as the clock counted down. Another break from them down the right and a shot at goal found Connor diving and saving to his right and the defense cleared once again.
The final whistle blew and we came away with the win. At the end of the day we made hard work of it however the boys need to learn from any mistakes made and next week we go again.

7th March: Turton Tigers vs Horwich

Today we travelled up the road to face off with Turton Tigers for the away fixture that brought about a comfortable win in the revers home fixture. On arrival there was only one thing whispering through the stands “how small is this pitch”. It was obvious to all it was probably going to be the smallest pitch we would play on this season and that it would play a part in the game both in size and condition. The message before kick off was to be right at it as there was very little room to play football today was always going to be about a battle.

Kick off began and it was clear to see that Turton had started the brighter, the locomotives didn’t really get going and struggled to adapt to the pitch and the pace as Turton pressed well and won all the first and second contacts. The pressure built up as we found ourselves having to defend for large parts of the first half and not being able to get hold of the ball for any large spells. Turton created some chances but didn’t manage to find the early goal they were looking for.

Mid way through the first half the locomotives managed to string a few passes together and found Sam, his ball across found Fynley on the right hand side who’s first time effort went narrowly past the far post. This brought a little confidence into the team and further opportunities were created as Tom and Ben had efforts on goal but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

It was Turton’s turn to create a good opportunity with a clever through ball beyond the back line but some great recovery and positioning from Blake thwarted the attack however moments later the deadlock was broken and it was the home side that was celebrating with a neat finish one on one beyond Connor. It was fair to say on balance of play the home side deserved to go in front and they kept hold of the lead until the half time whistle. A half that the locomotives wasted, it was a real struggle for the 35 minutes with our standards dropping well below our best in recent weeks. The boys were glad to get in and get some instructions from the coaches.

During the interval the boys re grouped as the coaches re iterated that this game was all about desire, total football wasn’t going to be the way back into this one and it was simply going to be about wanting it more than they do, however believe that we are good footballers and get back to good technique and organisation.

The second half began and the rest had done the locomotives good as they started much better. Getting on the ball and showing some composure that was missing in the first half however remembering how small the pitch was there was still very little time on the ball. Some early chances for Turton didn’t materialise to much and the locomotives were soon level. Good closing down and shot from Tom missed but Blake reacted well and laid it off to Fynley who’s composed finish to the bottom left corner gave us parity. Seconds later and another through ball down the channel found Fynley again who fired low and hard but the keeper made a good save. The locomotives were certainly on top and the mood in the stands was it was only a matter of time before the next goal came. They were soon proved right as Harry reacted to a goal kick and drove through. With the on rushing keeper looking to make amends Harry showed good confidence to slot it past him and into the empty net for a 2-1 lead.

If anyone thought the game was won there they were very much wrong as Turton showed great resilience and came right back at us. Some good football and some panick defending saw Turton create a 1 on 1 and the player made no mistake finding the back of the net to draw level at 2-2. Moments later a scramble in the box from a throw in somehow found the ball in the back of our net and the comeback was complete as Turton had turned things around in front of a noisy home crowd.

With the game running out of time the locomotives pushed forward at every opportunity looking for another equaliser. Turton however were standing firm and were dangerous on the counter as this game looked like it could go either way. The locomotives managed to manifest a good opportunity through Josh down the wing, his cross fell to Tom who didn’t catch it clean but put it on Target, Harry was there to turn the ball home from close range however the flag was up for offside to deny the goal. The away fans wondered would that be our last chance however with 4 minutes left on the clock the ball was worked out to Fynley on the right, dribbling past two he put the ball across goal, Harry got on the end of it but his shot was blocked and it fell to Tom, this time he made no mistake and fired a low right footed shot hard to the centre of the goal to make it 3-3. There were only 2 minutes left but the locomotives tails were up and they carved out one last opportunity with a through ball to Fynley but his shot went high and wide. Turton continued to look for the winner but some resolute defending shut them out and the final passage of play brought a final last gasp chance for Harry but the ball just ran away from him after turning his man and the keeper got down well to smother the ball

This was a game that on form we should have won, the pitch played its part for large spells but the boys need to be able to adapt well to changing conditions. Their technique and decision making let them down today however they showed great character especially in the second half to come back into the game and give themselves a chance of winning it. A draw was a fair result in the end for both teams but it will be the home side who will go away the happier.

MOTM: Ben, he dragged us back into the game with his standards and his relentless effort and energy in the middle of the pitch was a cut above the rest today. A really good performance when it mattered for his team mates. Well done Ben.

Match Report - 28 February 2026
Bury FC u12 A vs Horwich St Mary’s Locomotives

Cup Match - 3rd Round

After what this reporter believes was a comfortable win in the first round and a bye in the 2nd round we faced up against Bury FC A team who we have played twice this season, both times in the league. The first time we played them was at home , our fortress , whereby we held our own and came away with a 2-2 draw. Only one of two teams to take points off of them this season. The other team being their B team who we beat at Gigg Lane. The second time we played them was at Gigg Lane and sadly our heads were not in the game on that fateful day… we don’t need reminding of the score.
This was going to be a battle and the lads knew it. From the first whistle the lads challenged and fought for the second balls. It was evident that if their keeper was challenged he would make a mistake under pressure. The more that he was pressured by our forwards the more he appeared to be less comfortable. A great shot from Harry went wide. We kept pressing and the lads were not giving up. We needed a breakthrough. Sadly through a lapse in concentration they opened the scoring and we went 1-0 down.
Defensively we were doing all we could to close them down wherever and whenever they could however they sadly managed to sneak in another.
We went into half time 2-0 down however this game seemed far from over.

The second half opened with a further intensity and we knew we had to get one back. By getting one back it would put them on the back foot. Harry hit the post from a header and Logan hit a rocket which too hit the post. On a day when we needed some luck 🍀 it was evident that the footballing Gods were not present. Despite some good passing, constant pressure we sadly could not find a breakthrough and our heads started to drop.
They slotted home another three however this reporter feels that none of their goals were outstanding. Not taking anything away from Bury they were the ones who found the back of the net.
Through a flick on from Harry, Tom managed to get one back for us.

The lads all played their hearts out on Saturday despite the result not going our way. Sam fought for every ball , challenged , was strong like Daniel Son.

We will put this behind us , the lads have the tenacity to bounce back.

Saturday 21st February

Bridgewater vs Horwich locomotives

Today we traveled over to bridgewater who had arranged a 3G pitch to make sure the game went ahead. Early opinions during the warm up leaned to how big the pitch was especially in length and how the locomotives could use this to their advantage.

The referee blew the whistle and kick of
began however it didn’t take long before bridgewater found themselves on the front foot. Some composed play all over the pitch from the home side led to an early chance however Connor matched the composure and got down to save well from a low shot. It was clear to see that bridgewater had settled well and were using the size of the pitch to their advantage as the locomotives struggled to get any grip on the game. A few minutes later and Bridgewater carved out another excellent opportunity with a strike on goal but again Connor was up to the challenge and thwarted the attempt. The confidence grew from the home side as they didn’t look like a team who had only picked up 4 points this season and they dominated the first and second ball and came out on top of all the duels all over the pitch.

The locomotives dug in as they tried to settle and started to look like a team who was in a good vain of form, a nice passage of play with some players linking up for the first time brought about their first effort with a shot from Tom which rose over the bar. However this didn’t spur them on as the coaches would have like and it was Bridgewater who continued to dominate and create their 3rd good opportunity with another effort on goal. A great shot from the right hand side on an angle was saved in the top corner by Connor on to the post and away. It was beginning to look like hard work for the locomotives who had started really slow and owed a lot to Connor for keeping them in the game early on.

As the first half continued the locomotives finally created another chance this time Ben finding some space in the centre of the goal and firing towards the corner however the keeper managed to get a hand to it and push it away for a corner. The locomotive finally looked like they were competing for the first time albeit slowly and against the run of play it’s fair to say, Tom played a brilliant pass through the middle for Harry to run onto and he made no mistake slotting home for an undeserved 1-0 lead. That seemed to settle a few nerves and it wasn’t long before Fynley reacted to a pass and intercepted the ball running through 1 on 1 with the keeper he showed great composure and nestled it into the bottom corner for a 2-0 lead which they held onto to half time.

The second half began and the locomotives looked a lot sharper and brighter moving the ball around with more confidence as they searched for the next goal. On 50 minutes however a switch off of play by the team from a throw in on the right hand side saw the ball come into the box. With no one from the locomotives reacting to the danger Bridgewater converted with an easy chance in front of goal to make it 2-1. Moments later with their tails up Bridgewater found themselves in front of goal again with a shot on goal. Goal bound Connor scrambled and dived to his left hand side and made the save but the ball fell to Bridgewater who had an easy tap in WHAT A SAVE!!. Connor reacting brilliantly from the first save somehow managed to get across and stick out a strong left arm to deny Bridgewater a certain equaliser. A save of the highest quality from a top keeper kept the advantage in the locomotives favour and this seemed to be the turning point.

Moments later Bridgewater tried a long through ball but Connors positional play was outstanding today and he was in hand to clear the ball early back up the field which found Harry through on goal. Letting the ball come down with a couple of bounces he smashed into the back of the net for a 3-1 lead. The locomotives continued to push and work hard and goal of the game came from some good work down the right hand side from Fynley taking on his man and unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top left corner for 4-1.

Bridgewater looked a little tired as the half went on and the fitness of the locomotives showed a well worked move saw Harry play a tidy through ball to Ben who steadied himself and slotted the ball past the keeper with the outside of his right foot to the bottom right hand corner for 5-1. Continuing their dominance Josh found some space and earned himself a great shot but the keeper saved down to his left, Fynley was on hand to react to the save and put it across the goal where Harry was waiting for a tap in and his hat trick for 6-1. Not letting up the locomotives continued to push for more and towards the end Fynley found himself through on goal on the right hand side, the shot came in on the angle but the keeper made the save however Fynley pounced on the second ball and calmly played it to Harry for his 4th and the locomotives 7th.

The final whistle went and the locomotives continued their good form and run of results with a 7-1 victory. It was a good result in the end however it could have been a different story if it was not for Connor today pulling of some tremendous saves to keep us in the game, and a stark reminder that in this league who ever we play top or bottom we need to do the basics well otherwise we give up chances and goals and will make life difficult for ourselves. We showed good resilience today on the back foot and worked our way into the game with everyone eventually coming out on top.
