Despite the freezing temperatures and, let’s be honest, a challenging Ashes series a few thousand miles away, it was a real pleasure to talk proper cricket and head down to Bishopthorpe Cricket Club to meet with Matt and Ed. 🏏

I saw for myself the incredible work being done at the heart of our community. Just two years ago, this historic club was on the brink, facing the very real possibility of closure due to a lack of players. Today, thanks to the dedication, hard work and determination of volunteers, players and supporters, Bishopthorpe Cricket Club has completely turned things around and is thriving. It is exactly the kind of good news story we see so often across York, with committed local people making things succeed through sheer effort and care.

Founded in 1848 and still going strong, the club is a powerful example of what can be achieved when a community pulls together. Local cricket matters. It is about far more than what happens on the pitch. It brings people together, gives people opportunities, and keeping community spirit alive.

While the new season is still a few months away, I would encourage everyone to get down to watch a game in the warmer weather, get involved if you can, and help ensure this historic club continues to thrive for generations to come. Luke

There was a last day of term feel about the final game of the season with Bishopthorpe now mathematically safe from the threat of relegation that has been hanging over them for most of the season. There was still plenty at stake for visitors Sheriff Hutton Bridge, who were very much in with a chance of promotion.

They knew that victory at Ferry Lane would clinch a place in Division 2, providing if Stillington dropped points against bottom side Knaresborough. As it turned out, that game ended in a tie, but Sheriff Hutton Bridge were no match for an in-form Bishopthorpe side who were intent on avenging the 194 run defeat earlier in the season and finishing the season on a high.

On a distinctly autumnal afternoon SHB won the toss and invited Bishopthorpe to bat first on a pitch still damp from overnight rain. Shortly after drinks at the halfway point Tom Schofield was dismissed for 36 and the innings was finely balanced with home side were 93-4. That brought Sam Davies together with Chris Norton, and what followed was quite remarkable. After being dropped whilst on 13, Davies took the attack to the SHB bowlers, smashing 11 sixes and 9 fours on his way to a score of 127 from just 55 balls. 104 of his runs came off his last 30 balls and the score is the fifth highest by a Bishopthorpe batsman on record. Harry and Archie Goodwill were the unfortunate bowlers who bore the brunt of the onslaught, their combined four overs going for 73 runs. Davies shared a record partnership for any wicket of 173 runs with Chris Norton who added valuable support and finished 60 not out as the home side powered to a total of 289-7 from their 40 overs.

Needing to score at well in excess of 7 an over, SHB were pegged back by John Latimer who picked up the wickets of both openers and Jamie Blackburn who bowled his 10 overs for just 25 runs. Leading wicket taker Brandon Clapham then picked up 3-24 and Sridar Seshan helped himself to a couple of scalps to seal an emphatic 137 run victory.

The win saw Bishopthorpe leapfrog Woodhouse Grange and finish in 8th place in the league, winning 8 out of their final 11 games of the season after picking up just one win in their first 11. In a season dominated by a battle to stay up, the strong finish left them just 26 points off the promotion places, and 35 points clear of the drop zone.

So that's it for another year. Bishopthorpe look forward to their awards evening in October where they will recognise some of the fine performances over the summer, and will head to winter nets in January to prepare to do it all over again in 2026.

It really has been a season of two halves. After picking up just one win in the first 11 games and looking odds on to be relegated, victory over Knaresborough this afternoon at Bishop Monkton means that Bishopthorpe have now won 7 out of their last 9 games and finish the season as one of the form sides in the division.

On a pretty rough looking wicket, Bishopthorpe put their understrength hosts in to bat. Brandon Clapham and Jamie Blackburn who are battling it out to be leading wicket taker took the new ball but despite keeping things tight, neither was able to make a breakthrough. The Knaresborough openers showed some resistance as they made steady, if rather pedestrian progress, putting on 93 for the first wicket in 26 overs, before Sridhar Seshan finally broke the partnership. Ian Holmes then picked up 4-42 as the home side posted a target of 179-6 from their 40 overs, with Andy Kenny picking up the other wicket to fall.

Bishopthorpe lost both openers cheaply, but Scott Clapham (45) and Ben Smith (38) steadied the ship, scoring quickly and staying well ahead of the required rate. Neither were able to see it through, but Ian Holmes (51no) rounded off a man of the match performance with a half century, which he brought up by hitting a six to clinch a comfortable 5 wicket victory with 7 overs to spare.

Next Saturday Bishopthorpe, now mathematically safe from the lingering threat of relegation, play promotion chasing Sheriff Hutton Bridge at Ferry Lane in the final game of the season. Tomorrow the Riversiders are in action, in their final home game of the season, taking on Cambridge Methodists in a 40 over match starting at 12:30pm.

Bishopthorpe's final away game of the season sees them travel to Bishop Monkton CC to face Knaresborough 3rd XI. Earlier in the season when the two sides met it was a thriller with Bishopthorpe clinching victory in the final over.

Sam Davies returns and will resume keeping duties, with Chris Norton, Marc Deamer and Ian Holmes all coming in to the side that beat Hovingham at Ferry lane last weekend.

Bishopthorpe secured a convincing 8-wicket win against third placed Hovingham which will almost certainly guarantee Division 3 cricket at Ferry Lane next summer. At the half way point in the season avoiding relegation looked a nigh on impossible task, but the remarkable turnaround in fortunes sees them 19 points clear of relegation rivals Yapham with a maximum of 20 points left to play for.

The visitors opening batsman have both scored more than 500 runs apiece this season, and on winning the toss chose to bat first, but lost George Wainwright in Jamie Blackburn's first over. The start could have been an even better one, when the other opener Gareth Davies, the leagues leading run scorer, was put down at slip by the skipper. He was dropped a couple more times on his way to 38 before being caught in the deep by Ross Kelly off the bowling of Brandon Clapham. Hovingham were in a good position at drinks at 79-3, but the next 20 overs saw Bishopthorpe restrict the visitors to just another 59 runs with some tight bowling and excellent fielding with David Latimer, John Hall and Joe Littledale all outstanding. Andy Kenny was the pick of the bowlers with 10-4-20-3 with Tom Schofield also picking up three wickets as they set a below par 138-8 from their 40 overs.

It was a very gettable target, but the weather was closing in and there was already rain in the air when Bishopthorpe began their reply. However, openers Ross Kelly (34) and David Latimer (24) shared a half century partnership in good time to extinguish any hope the visitors had of defending the target. With the rain setting in Scott Clapham came to the crease and was at his destructive best, smashing 60 from 35 balls to see the Ferry Lane side home with 19 overs to spare.

Bishopthorpe now travel to bottom club Knaresborough before finishing the season with a home tie against Sheriff Hutton Bridge.
