Its been a busy couple of weeks with a great mix of jobs and bikes. On Friday however there was nothing booked in so I popped up to see Chuck at Pentland Cycles based in Midlothian, Scotland.

Chuck was my first Cytech instructor when I began my professional qualifications and he really helped and supported me as I was setting up the business. Earlier this year he moved to Scotland and has set up his own bike workshop, Pentland Cycles, nr Roslin

https://pentlandcycles.co.uk/

So if you are in the area, perhaps visiting Innerleithen or Glentress or perhaps undertaking the John Muir Way then pop in if you have a problem and I am sure Chuck will sort you out.

Bicycle servicing and repair in Midlothian and Edinburgh. Focusing on high quality servicing, suspension tuning, and general maintenance.

Been a bit remiss with the posts recently, that’s not to say there hasn’t been anything going on. Plenty of services, brake bleeds, tubeless conversions and dropper post issues amongst other things.
A few tips from recent experiences:
- Dropper posts – check your air pressure if performance is poor
- E-MTB – drivetrains take a beating and are expensive to replace, consider having three chains and rotating them to delay the cost of replacing the rear cassette.
- I am now able to fit Tannus airless tyres should you be fed up with punctures.
If you have anything needs looking at, please give me a call or whatsapp and get booked in.

Not updated for a bit so what have we been up to:

- Replaced a Mahle motor after having new bearings and seals fitted
- Quite a few general services and tubeless re-fills
- Replacement chainrings and chains
- Replaced front derailleurs
- Caliper clean & bleed

Also, the other week I mentioned the “Goatlink”, I have now fitted one on my road bike, allowing fitment of a 11 – 32T cassette (from an 11 – 28T) without replacing the derailleur (or levers). Works a treat, obviously you still incur the cost of a cassette and chain but still saves money.

Worth mentioning also that we are still experiencing some delays to receipt of spares, so please allow plenty of time for repairs if you need your bike for any events.

We also still have a few bikes for sale, they were donated by Garry Briton, we have given them the once over and replaced items where required. 50% of any proceeds are to be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind so we are open to offers:
- CBR Monster – Y frame MTB, 26” wheels, 3 x 7 gears (21 speed), V brakes. (see pic)
- Apollo Slalom childs MTB, 6 speed twist grip, V brakes, 20” wheels. (see pic)
- Apollo Mayhem Hybrid, 18” frame, 26” wheels, 3 x 7 (21 speed), V brakes, rear rack
and mudguards, ideal commuter. (see pic)

In addition, we have a fully rebuilt Cannondale F600 Furio Hardtail MTB – excellent condition, American built with Headshok. This has been completely stripped and re-built with new bearings, bottom bracket, chain, cassette, cables, hoses and pads. 3 x 9 speed, Magura Julie brakes and comes with original owners manual, one owner from new. This will also be on ebay. (also see pic)

Another busy, albeit short week.

Aside from the usual services, parts replacement and bleeds, we currently have 3 e-bikes with us. One we suspect requires replacement bearings (Manufacturer advised required motor replacement) so this has been sent away. Another does require a replacement motor, but again, this will be sent away for refurbishment at circa half the price. The third has a broken crank torque sensor which we believe we have now sourced and will look to fit and test next week.

So good news for e-bike owners, as your machines get older there are an increasing number of quality specialists able to refresh and refurbish rather than subject you to the significant cost of replacing with a new part. This will become even more important when manufacturers stop production of some of the older models. In many cases, these specialists are certified by the original manufacturer and in many cases also fit upgraded bearings and seals to hopefully prevent issues in the future.

What an amazing week, thank you everyone.

Got a couple booked in for next week too but still have availability so drop us a line if you need anything looking at.

Quieter week last week with a mix of services, diagnostics and replacing worn parts. Pleasingly we also had a few consumables sales.

The highlight was doing a 2 x to 1 x swap using a Goatlink, which is something I was previously not familiar with. This little device, when used with compatible components, allows you to retain the existing derailleur yet use with a wider spaced cassette. Worth investigating if it something you have been thinking about and been put off by the cost of replacing other components

Got a couple of bikes in for Monday and some parts due Tuesday but capacity if you have anything that needs looking at.

Please note we will be closed for Easter (Friday through Monday)

A great week again in the workshop, less good for pictures though!.

A wheel build, new tubes and tubeless tyre replacements, a few services and a replacement e-bike battery plus the usual pads and rotors. Had a few dropped off for this week too and have a couple more booked in.

A reminder that your forks and rear suspension should be serviced broadly every 50 and 200 hours of use. If you have Fox or Rockshox we can service most of these and if we can't, we can get them sent to their respective service centres. The good news is that if we get the serial numbers when booking we can likely turn around the same day.
