🏊 Swimming is a life skill. But opportunity remains unequal.

New BBC research has highlighted a stark divide in school swimming attainment in England.

While 72% of Year 6 pupils could swim 25 metres in 2024/25, this fell to just 55% in schools with the highest proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals.

For safe self-rescue, the gap is 70% nationally compared with just 50% in the most disadvantaged schools.

The investigation also highlights wider barriers, including access to pools, transport, costs and limited teaching time.

Access matters. Time in the water matters. Every child deserves the opportunity to develop these vital life skills.

The growing challenge facing school swimming

A recent article in The i Paper highlighted the increasing difficulty schools face in delivering statutory swimming lessons, with public pool closures, rising costs and limited availability creating real barriers.

With around 30% of children leaving primary school unable to swim 25 metres, improving access has never been more important.

We’re pleased that Swim:ED was featured as one practical solution, helping schools deliver swimming lessons on site through pop-up pools.

You could say:

🗣 “Let’s stay together.”
🗣 “That doesn’t look safe.”
🗣 “Let’s get help.”
🗣 “Don’t go in.”

And remember: in an emergency, call 999.

Whether you’re at the pool, beach, river, lake or canal, it’s always safer to stay with your group, keep an eye on each other and get help quickly if something doesn’t feel right.

And if you ever get into trouble in the water, remember to float and call for help.
