Private Practice Counsellors: Build an ethical Private Practice you love, working with your ideal clients while earning the income you deserve- all without guesswork or burning out.

Every counsellor I ask this question gives me one of three answers.

Fear of being judged by colleagues. Worry about what's ethical to say online. Or simply not knowing what to write.

All three are completely understandable. You trained to be a counsellor, not a marketer. But none of these fears go away by waiting. They shrink when you take one small step and discover the sky doesn't fall in.

So, honestly, which one is yours? Tell me in the comments. And if you'd like somewhere supportive to work on it, comment VISIBLE and I'll send you the details.

There was a stretch early on when my diary was almost empty and I spent far too much time refreshing my inbox, willing an enquiry to appear. If you've been there, you'll know how heavy that feels.

What changed wasn't a clever funnel or an expensive rebrand. I got clear on exactly who I help, and I committed to one helpful post a week. Not brilliant posts. Just consistent, useful ones. And I made sure every enquiry got a warm, quick reply, with a gentle follow up if I didn't hear back.

Clarity, consistency, follow up. That's the whole shift.

Save this for the next quiet week. There will be one, and it doesn't mean you're failing.

If you'd like support building this into your own practice, comment GROW and I'll send you the details of Private Practice Success.

Somewhere in training, most of us picked up the idea that marketing ourselves is unprofessional. Maybe even unethical.

I believed it too. My early posts were so cautious they said absolutely nothing.

But picture the person sitting at home at 11pm, searching for help with their anxiety. If they can't find you, they can't work with you. Being visible isn't showing off. It's how the right client finds the right counsellor, and it's part of doing this work well.

You don't need to dance on camera or write clever ads. You need to say clearly who you help, and show up regularly where they're looking.

If you'd like help doing that in a way that feels comfortable, comment MYTH and I'll send you the details of Private Practice Success, my community for UK counsellors.

What do you think of this- is he my AI friend or should he be retired

Feast and Famine.

Three enquiries in one week. Then nothing for a month. Sound familiar?

That rollercoaster is exhausting. You can't plan your income, you can't book a holiday with any confidence, and in the quiet weeks you start saying yes to clients who aren't right for you, at whatever fee they suggest, just because something is better than nothing.

And then a busy patch arrives and you stop doing any marketing at all, because you're full. Which guarantees the next quiet patch. Round and round we go.

A steady flow of enquiries doesn't come from luck, or from one big burst of effort when things get desperate. It comes from doing something small every single week, even when you're busy. Especially when you're busy.

So here's a question for you. What's one thing you could do for your practice this week that takes less than an hour? Just one. Do that this week, and again next week. It's the doing it every week that changes everything.

☀️ Private Practice Summer School is going so well, we've added two more dates.

Summer is often seen as a quiet time in private practice. But fewer therapists are taking on new clients right now too, which makes this a brilliant time to do a bit of groundwork. The counsellors who do are the ones with full diaries come autumn.

Here's the full timetable. All four are free to members to attend live- Join us from $9:

☀️ Instagram Carousel Magic
Wednesday 5th August, 6 pm
The launch of our Carousel Magic Training, with 5 free carousel templates for you to use in Canva, plus my top tips to boost your results on Instagram.

☀️ Better Directory Profiles
Thursday 13th August, 7pm
So popular in July we're running it again. My ten-point strategy to improve your directory profiles and get more referrals from the directories that are actually working.

☀️ Fix Your Counsellor Website
Wednesday 19th August, 7pm
Your website is where your directories and social media send people. We'll go through what actually matters on a counselling website so it quietly turns visitors into enquiries.

☀️ Facebook for Business
Wednesday 26th August, 7 pm
How to use Facebook to raise awareness of your practice and bring in clients, without spending all week on it.

Each one is an hour, and each one is about doing, not just learning. Premium members also get the recordings to watch back in their own time.

The role of local marketing in growing a successful private therapy practice in the uk

05/08/2026

"Don't waste your time; all Private Practice Clients come from online now." Really? Then I guess I'll have to give mine back. 😄

Counsellors, don't let anyone tell you that you need to spend a fortune on some fancy online system to get clients.

Local marketing is very much alive. Referrals, talks, networking with fellow counsellors, even cards and flyers done the right way. Still some of the most effective ways to fill a counselling practice, especially if you have a niche.

It's all about building your presence in your local area, and most of it costs nothing but a bit of time.
