My learn to ride lessons always drop off in the winter and for good reason. It’s often cold, wet or icy (or all three!). However, I’m always happy to reschedule lessons if the weather is not going to be fun for a child to ride in (or for me to teach in) but a lovely family traveled all the way from Crawley to Plaistow for a lesson last weekend and braved the weather all the same (fortunately the rain held off).
Teaching a child to two wheels from stabilisers usually takes a little longer than those who haven’t had stabilisers. This little girl turned up a little nervous initially but she was full of energy and had a massive smile on her face for the whole hour. It’s always encouraging when they are shouting over to their parents that “THIS IS SO MUCH FUN!”
Within 45 minutes this 5 year old was setting off herself and cycling on two wheels - She was over the moon about it too! (As were her parents).
I get so much joy from teaching a skill that will be with someone for life, even if it means I look like an idiot playing ponies and silly games in the process. I am looking forward to this trainee coming back for another lesson in a few weeks when we will work on cycling up and down little hills, on loose surfaces, braking, avoiding obstructions, looking around and cycling with others (my daughter likes to help with that bit!).
I’m available Wednesdays and Thursdays after School and at weekends if you want a few lessons to get your little (or big) one cycling and ready for a summer pedalling. I will also be offering a course in the Easter Holidays. I teach children from 3yrs to retired adults, from learning to ride or gaining confidence on the road or how to cycle safely as a family. Feel free to send me a message!
