A recent trip to Belgium for the junior Tour of Flanders.
A chance for the Liv CC Halo Films team to enjoy one of the most iconic of classics, on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far.

When you are chasing consistency in your training always remember that something is better than nothing.
Just because a ride can’t be the perfect one you planned, it doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing.

A long week at work, but a bit of time in the evening? Get out. It all adds to your total load, and it helps to clear the head.

It also helps keep the rhythm of training. The more your riding is regular and consistent, the easier it is to get out. And you don’t have to keep starting again with heavy legs.

This ride for me was after a busy week and an all day drive. Friday night, just an hour. But, it rode the stiffness out of the legs and made the Saturday ride feel like proper training, rather than a “got to get my body going again” type struggle.

No ride matters, but every ride does.

Some days the head isn’t as strong as you might want it to be.

Although my titanium Landrace Tupelo is impervious to rain and wind, my tired, post work psyche wasn’t.
Rollers it was then.

A simple, but hard VO2 Max set got it over with quickly. Not what I had planned, but way, way better than nothing. And remember, not every ride has to be perfect. It is consistency that matters most.

No ride matters… but every ride does.

Love this little exchange.

I helped a friend set up his new shoes. First time on clipless pedals for a very new to the sport cyclist.

Somehow made me remember my first time on Look pedals quite a few years ago - where like most of us at the time, I toppled over at some traffic lights.

Onwards and upwards, and always embrace trying new things.

Try as you might, on long rides it’s sometimes hard to get the fuelling right.

Crispy bars, gels, toast and jam at the club run café stop and coming towards the end of over 100 miles, I had still run out.

More often than not, the big thing at this stage is hydration.

So with only 35km to go, I stopped again:
1/2 litre of sparking, topped up the bottles, big mug off coffee, and of course a bit of cake, and the last hour or so felt in control.

It would have been easy to just carry on riding, but that way means trouble.

A fully depleted end of ride just hurts, but it damages you too. Adaptations from the ride are reduced and recovery compromised. Getting home on your endurance rides with the feeling you could carry on should be the goal.
Anything else means there are still skills and process to learn.

Things I like to see…

Liv CC Halo Films first year junior, Lauren Lee meeting and making friends with Under 23 rider, Ella Tandy at a recent British Women’s Team Cup road race.

What’s more special is that Simpson Nouvelles, Ella’s team is one of only two U23 Women’s teams in Europe, and our little team, Liv CC is their feeder.

For me, coaching is much more than just putting sessions into TrainingPeaks. It is helping riders develop in many ways. For the Liv juniors to see the next step, up close and on their wheel, is huge. And Simpson, in its turn, is almost unique in bridging the gap between junior and full elite.

Another thought on consistency....

It’s a word you hear a lot in cycling, and one that is the basis of my coaching. But it’s also something that has different meaning depending on where you are in your riding life.

When we’re building fitness within a season, it’s the simple act of getting the rides done - week in, week out, month in, month out - that matters most. Fitness builds slowly, and predictably, if the work keeps getting done.
Zoom out a little further and the same idea applies over years. Fitness can be built year on year. It’s one of the reasons professional riders often get stronger as their careers progress. Nothing magical - just a lot of steady, repeated work.

At the definitely non-professional end of things, PJ is one of my coached heroes for exactly this reason.
He started cycling about a year ago on the Cent-Soulor, my 0–100 km in 16 weeks programme, and then moved into personal coaching. Living in South London and working in Canary Wharf, he’s built consistency into a busy life. Four simple sessions a week at first. Then, within six months, enjoying regular 4–5 hour club runs into the Surrey Hills.
Nothing dramatic. Nothing rushed. Just rhythm.

As PJ puts it himself:

“Being consistent week-in, week-out over the past 5 months has been the key to my development and fitness on the bike. It’s amazing how only 4 days per week - targeted & structured training - has enabled me to increase both mileage and quality of sessions. It’s nice to feel yourself progressing.”

What I’m looking forward to now for PJ is seeing how that same approach keeps building - how this year’s consistency quietly becomes the foundation for next year’s.

Winter is leaving, but it’s not quite spring. That in-between moment when our cycling life changes — and, in my mind at least, usually for the better.

As the nights draw out and the weather (hopefully) starts to feel brighter, it’s a good time to pause, refocus, and check that the direction of travel is right.

For me, this is always a moment to come back to consistency. I talk about it a lot - probably too much - but after years of coaching, it’s still the single biggest thing we can do to build fitness.

So, as the seasons begin to change, look for ways to keep your riding consistent. Look at your routines. Look at how your time gets used - and how easily sessions get lost. If your bike needs attention, make sure you’ve looked at it before trying to head out the door. Get kit ready in advance too. A neat pile of cycling clothes waiting for you makes early mornings easier and getting out after work or school more likely.

None of this is rocket science – but it’s rarely the clever stuff that moves things forward. It’s discipline, habit and routine that makes the difference.
And the beauty is, to build fitness, you don’t need every ride to be perfect. You just need to ride.

If you complete most of what you plan, month after month, you’ll improve - even if none of the rides feel remarkable at the time.

Remember - consistency compounds. Sporadic perfection doesn’t.

People often ask what coaching really does.

It doesn’t remove the work.
And it doesn’t make things easy.

What it does is add structure, honesty and a steady rhythm - so progress continues even when motivation fades.

Rory didn’t need hype.
She needed consistency.
Belief.
And clear guidance about where she was - and where she could go.

There were no shortcuts.
No hero weeks.

Just steady progress.
Built quietly, over time.

If you’re preparing for something that matters…
If you’re wondering whether you’re ready…

With Soulor, you soon will be.
