On probably the greatest pitch in any of the football leagues, Sunday morning saw Belper take on an Ockbrook side in good form, with the latter taking the 3 points in the last fixture between these two sides.

Athletic started the game with a point to prove and it was clear that the energy and intensity was there from the first whistle, with Belper dominating the first half. Nick Meakin opened the scoring with a tidy finish from the edge of the box to give Athletic a well deserved lead. The pressure continued and paid off as Luke Greenwood headed home from a corner to double the lead. If not for a handful of spurned chances, the lads could have found themselves 3 or 4 up at half time.

Ockbrook started the second half well and Belper soaked up the early pressure with some good defensive work. Joe Bacon then latched onto a through ball before getting his shot away, a deflection left the ball in the air for Jared Holmes to nod into an empty net to give Athletic their 3rd of the day.

The rest of the game played out with relatively little action to finish 3-0. A great effort by the lads in difficult conditions.

After the Christmas break we return with a home fixture against Darley Abbey.

Belper returned to action on a chilly Sunday morning for a clash against newcomers to the league - Ockbrook.

A slow start to the game found the lads coming in to half time a goal down, and our keeper whisked off to A&E for a precautionary scan following a hefty collision.

Athletic started the second half well, and their early pressure was rewarded following a drilled shot from Mark Rathbone from 20 yards out.

The pressure continued as we looked for the second goal with some good passages of play. However, Ockbrook managed to capitalise on the counter to restore their lead which left the blues chasing for an equaliser for the final 20 minutes.

Unable to find the illusive second goal, Belper fell to a frustrating 2-1 defeat.

Back to winning ways for the Athletic on Sunday!

It was the perfect start to the game as some quality footwork and finishing from Jake put Belper 1-0 in the opening few minutes. Jake quickly doubled our lead just a couple of minutes later and it looked like Belper were cruising to a comfortable victory. Overconfidence and sloppiness however started to creep in, and 2 cheap goals got Raynesway back in to the game at 2-2 at the half.

In the second half we looked to build on the quality we showed at the start of the game. Jake turned provider for Belpers 3rd as his corner found Nicks darting front post run who’s powerful header reestablished Athletics lead. Another corner, another goal a couple of minutes later as Charlie’s in-swinger found Bayleigh lurking at the back post to head home. We continued to pile the pressure on Raynesway and Jake rounded off his hat trick with his best of the day as a great strike from outside the box skimmed the underside of the crossbar to make it 5. Harry finished the days scoring with a sixth in the dying embers of the game as he slotted home from short range for his first for the club.

Despite Raynesways players being able to bench 140, the second half was a real display of our strength. On to Chello away this Sunday!

Sunday Morning at Alton Manor played host to the league leaders as Belper faced off against Sparta Derby in what would turn out to be an eventful game.

The match started off well for Athletic who began brightly, and their dominant start was rewarded as Jared Holmes rifled a shot into the corner from the edge of the box following a corner to give the Blues a 1 goal lead.

Sparta responded quickly following a well taken penalty to draw things even and matters were made worse when Belper then found themselves down to 10 following an interesting challenge from Nick Meakin.

The league leaders capitalised on their 1 man advantage to take the lead midway through the second half, before Belper levelled the scoreline through a fantastic touch and finish from Jake Carter-Pope. The second half drew to a close with Sparta bagging a 3rd goal late on to give Belper a hill to climb in the second half.

The blues started the second half well, with Liam Pickard scoring early on from the edge of the box, once again following a corner and following some resolute defending from the back 4.

Unfortunately, the task of 10 vs 11 proved too much for a tiring Atheltic side who shipped two goals within the final 20 to see the game finish 5-3.

A disappointing scoreline but a performance to be proud of from the lads and a lot of encouragement to be taken from the heart shown.

A game marred by controversy and early injuries results in a frustrating defeat for Athletic.

Belper got off to the best possible start after Jake turned his defender inside out and then found the net with a stunning strike from a tight angle. A Spondon penalty took us in to the break level pe***ng.

Belper regained the lead shortly after half time, as Bacon headed home from a Jack Riley “pass” across goal. Like in the first half, we were unable to hold on and ultimately fell to defeat.

A difficult one to take but we come back stronger for the next one!💪

Nothing is certain but death, taxes and Joe Bacon goals.

Chello were gifted an early lead through a fine, first time finish (if I say so myself). Athletic then started to grow back in to the game and show our quality and it was Rathers who provided a teasing ball in to the box for Bacon to equalise. Bacon quickly found the back of the net again with a lovely header from another great ball in - Nick the provider this time. Bacon rounded off his 10 minute hat trick as he finished at the keepers near post following off the back of a solo run to send us into half time 3-1 up.

The second half was more of the same as Belper continued to dominate the lions share of the chances and could have had 3 or 4 more. It was Rathers who provided the goal of the day as he curled a beauty of a free kick into the top corner.

Another brilliant team performance to make it back to back wins. After dominating the midfield and picking up a goal and assist it’s Rath who picks up MOTM. On to Spondon next week!

It was back to winning ways on Sunday for the Athletic.

After being pegged back early on, a set piece allowed Bayleigh to nod it back across goal for Bacon to slot home. Belper found themselves behind again but Charlie was on hand to capitalise from the Risotto goalkeeper spilling JH7s beautiful ball over to send us in at 2 apiece.

In the second half we really kicked on as Jake CP finished coolly on his debut just after the break. Bacon doubled our lead off the back of a strong solo run before he then beat the keeper for Oli to finish off for Athletics 5th. Raith rounded off the scoring at the near post from Bower’s corner.

A deserved win and the first +3 of the season! A great performance from all involved but 2 goals and 2 assists sees Bacon pick up MOTM.

Back at home next week as we face Chellaston Wanderers.

A much improved performance sees us take our first point of the season.
Belper started strongly in the game and got the goal we deserved after Bacon found the bottom corner from outside the area. After a fantastic strike from Risotto and some questionable officiating, we went into the break all square at 1-1.
The second half we continued with the same tempo as we chased to put the game to bed however found ourselves 2-1 after some poor marking at a set piece. It took until 80 minutes for the referee to realise we weren’t playing volleyball as Belper were awarded a penalty, which Bacon coolly tucked away for his second of the game.
Some great performances all round which would have translated into a win on another day. Jack Riley is unlucky to not come out with MOTM after some fantastic work rate in the midfield but it was Bayleighs command of a stronger back line which really saw us through.

Onto Netherseal in the County Cup next week!
