Match Report
Cwm Talwg 3–1 St Athan
Premier Division – Matchday 2
Cwm Talwg produced a statement performance on Matchday 2, overcoming a strong St Athan side who had ended Vale Madrid’s long unbeaten run just a week earlier. After an opening-day defeat to Penarth Town in which the Talwg deserved far more than the 3–1 scoreline, this was the perfect response to show they belong at Premier Division level.
The tone was set in the pre-match team talk, with coaches Declan Edwards and Mike Roberts urging their side to play positive, forward-thinking football and take their chances when opportunities arose. The players wasted no time in answering the call. In the 7th minute, Cole Roberts danced past his marker, cut inside, and struck from the edge of the box. His effort took a deflection, wrong-footing the St Athan keeper and giving Talwg a deserved early lead.
With the midfield dictating the tempo and wingers Jack Cutajar and Roberts continually stretching the defence, Talwg looked the sharper of the two sides. However, on 28 minutes, St Athan showed their quality with a neat passage of play that was finished clinically to bring the scores level at 1–1.
Half-time brought no changes, only a reminder from the coaching team to trust in the football being played – and the rewards would come. That belief was vindicated when, on a swift counter-attack, debutant Conor Wilson announced himself in style, lashing home a half-volley into the bottom corner to restore Talwg’s lead.
The game then became scrappy as the referee, under assessment, punished Talwg for almost every contested challenge. Frustration grew and eventually boiled over when centre-half Jack Stokes was shown a 10-minute sin bin for dissent – a reminder of the fine line between passion and discipline.
Fresh legs came in the final stages, with Ellis Howe replacing the impressive Wilson and Monty slotting in for Daf Jones. Both substitutes kept the tempo high, and Talwg’s persistence finally killed the contest in the 87th minute. A goalmouth scramble fell to Sam Bowen, who bundled the ball over the line to spark celebrations and seal a 3–1 victory.
It was a complete team performance, blending flair with grit, and one that will give Talwg plenty of belief for the challenges ahead. The squad now take a break with a bye in the cup next weekend before returning to league action.
Final Score: Cwm Talwg 3–1 St Athan
Goals: Roberts (7’), Wilson (2H), Bowen (87’)
Cwm Talwg would like to wish St Athan all the best for the remainder of the season.
