Is this the hardest opening hole in the UK? 👀⛳️

The 1st at The Shire London

An island par 3 to start your round.

Water short.
Water long.
Water left.
Water right.

And just to make things interesting, the green slopes downhill towards the water and is only 17 paces wide through the middle.

No easing in the round or settling your nerves. Your first swing of the day has to be good or it wrecks your card with 17 to go 🤯

So… is there a tougher 1st hole anywhere in the UK?

2026 has brought some extreme challenges for golf courses. When we opened in 2007, one of the biggest questions was: “How does your course drain?”

Nearly 20 years later, the question has almost completely reversed: “How do you get enough water onto your golf course?”

Prolonged dry periods, rising temperatures and increasingly frequent heatwaves are changing the way golf courses need to be managed.

We’re fortunate to be in a good position with our water supply, but we can’t take that for granted. We have to look ahead and continue investing to future-proof the golf course against longer droughts and more extreme weather.

The challenge for golf has changed and we have to change with it. The weather is changing. Golf has to be ready for it and The Shire will be 🙏

It’s been a long, hot summer and we’re not through it yet.

Behind the scenes, our greenkeeping team has been working from dawn until dusk to keep The Shire London in fantastic condition. Extra watering, careful course management and plenty of hard work mean the fairways are staying green and the greens are rolling beautifully.
