HOLE 1 | EARLY TEMPTATION ⛳
Par 5 | 481 yards (Back) | 407 yards (Front)

The 1st hole at Hadley Wood is a welcoming Par 5 that eases you into the round… while quietly revealing its first test of judgement.
From the tee, the fairway invites confidence, but the bunkering demands respect. Navigate them cleanly and the hole opens up, presenting an early birdie opportunity for those willing to take it on.
The decision quickly arrives from the fairway: play safely into position, or take on the green in two and test your nerve early. The reward is there—but so is the risk.
The green itself is long and subtly sloped from front to back, with a false front ready to reject anything slightly short. For those firing at back-left positions, Clyde Johnson’s back ‘scab’ bunker sits ominously in the eye line, waiting to catch anything struck with too much ambition.
It’s a gentle introduction to Hadley Wood… but one that quietly begins to reveal the character of what lies ahead.

HERON’S REST – The Third Hole - Par 3
The 3rd is one of Hadley Wood’s defining holes.

Playing back towards the clubhouse, this striking par three sits alongside the fishing lake, combining one of the finest views on the course with one of its most exacting tests. The green appears inviting from the tee, but looks can be deceiving.

At over 200 yards from the back markers, commitment is everything. The green falls subtly from right to left, with deep bunkers and the ever-present lake waiting to gather anything struck without conviction. There is no comfortable miss, only varying degrees of trouble.
What makes the third memorable is not simply its beauty, but the tension it creates. The stillness of the setting contrasts sharply with the challenge of the shot. It draws you in, asks you to admire it, then demands your full attention.

A hole to be admired. A shot to be respected. A par to be earned.

Sixth Hole: “KEYHOLE”
The 6th is a hole that reveals itself gradually.

Played through a corridor of mature trees, the tee shot is framed by an avenue that draws the eye towards the fairway beyond. At first glance, the challenge appears straightforward. Look closer and the hole begins to reveal its subtlety.

Position is everything. Hidden bunkers on the right await the overly ambitious, while a drive placed left-centre opens the preferred angle into the green. From there, the architecture comes into focus. Guarded by mature a oak and a deep bunker to the front-left, the putting surface falls gently from back-right to front-left, rewarding an approach played from the correct side of the fairway.
Like a key finding its lock, success on the 6th comes not from power alone, but from precision and placement. The hole quietly rewards those who understand its angles and punishes those who do not.

An understated test of strategy, and one of Hadley Wood’s most intelligent par fours.

The Fifth Hole – “The Ramparts”
Par 4 – 440 Yards (Back) / 365 Yards (Front)

Played from a beautifully lowered tee, the 5th at Hadley Wood Golf Club unfolds with all the cunning theatre of Alister MacKenzie at his most deceptive.

From the moment one stands upon the teeing ground, the eye is drawn upward toward a distant green seemingly engulfed by sand — every bunker appearing to cling directly to the putting surface itself. It is an illusion of depth and scale, masterfully contrived, and one which has unsettled golfers for more than a century. MacKenzie believed a golf hole should reveal itself slowly, teasing uncertainty into even the most confident player, and nowhere at Hadley Wood is that philosophy more alive.
The drive climbs gently toward the farthest reaches of the property, where, through a parting in the landscape, the Georgian clubhouse briefly reveals itself behind the treeline — a striking and almost romantic glimpse homeward, cleverly disguising just how far the routing has carried the golfer from the opening ground.
And then comes the approach.

Perched proudly above its surroundings, the restored green rises from a fortress of flashed white bunkering, revived in recent years by Clyde Johnson and Brett Hochstein in faithful celebration of MacKenzie’s original intent. Miss the target by the slightest margin and the ground falls cruelly away into treacherous run-offs and tightly gathered hollows, leaving recoveries of infinite delicacy.

It is no surprise the 5th bears Stroke Index 1. Yet its difficulty possesses elegance rather than brutality. The hole does not bully; it beguiles. And in doing so, it captures the very soul of Golden Age golf architecture.
