Four days ticked off this week and the legs are definitely earning their keep. Monday was all about core and stretching, Tuesday I braved a 45‑minute cycle (didn’t love it, didn’t hate it — definitely better than sitting on a gym bike). Wednesday was an easy 10k that felt sluggish from the first step, but it got done. Then another core session and dance fit with Ashlee, adding a wee bit of variety. Today was an hour on the cross trainer to keep things moving.

Tomorrow I’ve got a light gym session planned, and I’ll probably head out for a long walk to keep the legs loose before the big one.

And honestly… about Saturday’s 48k. My stomach has been doing somersaults all day and I’m still two days out. This run is going to push my body right to the edge. I’m not even sure I can complete it — but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got.

The plan is simple: painfully slow from the first kilometre, walk the hills, walk when my heart rate drifts too high, and stay in that easy zone for as long as my legs will let me. If you know me, you know I’m an emotional runner (and an emotional person in general). I’ve got a few pit stops planned at family houses, Mum is meeting me for the final car stop, and my sister is on standby for the inevitable emotional phone calls telling me to get a grip and keep going.

I probably won’t post again until Saturday night, I'm going to enjoy my carb load of pasta and bread. Anything above a marathon will be a win — but I’d love to get the full 48k done. I’ll be heading out around 9am and it’ll take somewhere between five and seven hours.

See you on the flipper 😜

32k long run in the bag yesterday. First 10k solo, then the rest with Dij as he smashed his second ever half marathon — well done pal.

Felt much stronger than my last 32k. I finally got my fuelling strategy right and it made a massive difference. That said… I’m still not sure where I’m supposed to find another 16k in my legs next weekend. 48km is my final long run before Saltire — just over two weeks out and very real now.

A few people (runners and non‑runners) might find the fuelling side interesting, because honestly, it’s like being a walking buffet.

Breakfast: overnight oats + two black coffees with honey.
During the run: carbs every 15 minutes for the first 2 hours, then a carb drink and more food.

Total consumed:
- Drumstick Squashies — 100g
- Cheese and onion pretzels — 60g
- Ginger and rhubarb jam sandwich
- 2 flapjacks
- 2 energy gels
- 80g carb drink
- 1 Lucozade Sport

That’s 1,400 calories, 327g carbs, over 3.5 hours, with 2,400 calories burned.

Ultra training really is just running… and eating… and running… and eating.
Saltire, I’m coming for you.

Two posts in one day, but this one matters. Today marks 300 days sober, and it honestly crept up on me. The last 300 days have been some of the most challenging of my life, but they’ve also taught me more about myself than I ever expected.

I’ve learned that I’m not actually a social person — I just liked the drinks in the pub, not the pub itself. I’ve learned that I love exercise, structure, and pushing my body to see what it can do. I’ve learned that early mornings suit me, and being up before 7 makes me feel grounded in a way I never used to understand.

In these 300 days I’ve gone through a surgery, the loss of a pet, leaving uni, starting a new job, and now the build‑up to another surgery. Through all of that, I’ve stayed sober. My ADHD has been the hardest it’s ever been to manage, but I’m still learning, still adapting, and still showing up.

What I’m most proud of is that I don’t want to escape my life anymore. I want to live it. I appreciate the small things — quiet mornings, strong coffee, long runs, the feeling of getting better at something because I’ve put the work in.

I’m not perfect, but I’m present. And that’s a win.

Rest day today — normally that means a walk, cycle or something easy in the gym just to keep my body ticking over. Active recovery is still the best tip I’ve ever been given; keeping yourself moving helps everything stay loose and ready for the next session.

But with injuries, I’ve had to actually rest (good news though, no delayed ankle pain) — very little movement, just some mobility and stretching to keep things from tightening up. Not my favourite, but necessary.

It’s also carb‑load day, which basically means a full day of bread, pasta, crisps, bagels, rice pudding and jam. Ultra‑runner fuel at its finest.

My go‑to breakfast most mornings is overnight oats. I’ll pop a screenshot of what I include in mine (plus cinnamon for a wee bit of extra flavour). They look calorie‑heavy — and they absolutely are for me this weekend — but that’s the point. They’re filling, they’re easy, and they pack in plenty of fruit. They keep you satisfied right through to lunch and really help quieten that food noise.

If you’re on a calorie deficit or watching your fat intake, the recipe is super adaptable. 40 g oats, skimmed milk, a drizzle of honey and a banana is more than enough to start the day with fibre, carbs and something that actually keeps you full.

Test run complete and I actually felt strong — minus the beacon‑red face from the heat. Now it’s just a waiting game to see if the ankle throws a tantrum tomorrow.

So here’s the plan:

Plan A:
No or very little pain → 32k on Sunday, two long bike rides, a 10k mid‑week, then the big 48k next Saturday before I finally start tapering for race day.

Plan B:
Ankle is sore → a whole lot of cycling, cross trainer misery, and mental toughness training… then into the taper.

Both plans get me to the start line in almost one piece. Plan A just means I arrive with a bit more confidence (and slightly fewer existential crises).

I’ll be keeping this page updated as I go — but I want to know what you want from here.

Do you want more of the behind‑the‑scenes chaos from my own journey?
Or do you want some fitness hints, training tips, and what‑I‑eat content sprinkled in between?

Let me know so I can shape this page into something that actually helps (or at least entertains).

Funky tape job for the next few weeks… and honestly, I’m not even mad about it. The skull‑and‑eyeball combo almost matches my half sleeve, so at least my ankle is injured in style.

Training has been… character building.
I did an hour on the cross trainer yesterday and 45 minutes on the bike today, and both sessions were absolute hell. The kind of hell where you question your life choices, your hobbies, and whether running is actually worth it. (It is. Apparently.)

But if nothing else, this is going to do wonders for my mental toughness when I’m out on the course. Silver linings and all that.
Plus, I finally watched the Barkley Marathon documentary that’s been on my list forever, so at least my suffering was educational.

Ankle taped. Mind tested. Still moving.

Now for something different — let’s have some fun with this one:

- What’s the most ridiculous injury you've had?
- What’s your go‑to “I hate this but I’m doing it anyway” workout?
- If your body had a warning label during training, what would it say?

Today’s physio appointment was a bit of a reality check — the kind that’s frustrating but necessary. My body’s been working overtime, and it’s asking for a proper breather. Not ideal timing when I’ve been gearing up for a big training weekend, but listening now means I still get to chase the Saltire 12.

It does mean I’ll be missing my big back‑to‑back runs this weekend, and mileage will drop slightly. The plan is to shift that bigger weekend to next week if things settle. Rest, mobility, and smart rebuilding are the priority for now.

This part of training isn’t glamorous. It’s not the miles, the splits, or the grind — it’s the patience. But stepping back isn’t stepping away. It’s choosing the sensible route so I can get to that start line strong, not broken.

If you’re training for something big too, remember: recovery is part of the plan, not a pause from it. I’m still all‑in for the Saltire 12 — just taking the smarter path to get ther

Quick ankle update: it’s improving bit by bit. Two full rest days, elevation, icing, and a physio booked for tomorrow. Hoping to be back at it by Tuesday because this week is a big one.

Now for the real star of the week: Ashlee.

Four weeks ago we built a simple, realistic plan for her fitness and nutrition. Since then she has absolutely smashed it.
✔️ Every session
✔️ Every calorie goal
✔️ Every step target
✔️ One stone down
✔️ First solo gym session completed today

Ash, you’re proving exactly what consistency can do. So proud of you.

If anyone else wants some support getting started, I’ve got a few accountability spaces open while I work toward my qualifications. Not coaching — just guidance, structure, and someone in your corner. Before/after photos in return would be hugely appreciated

Not the update I wanted to share today, but an important one.

I’ve had to pull out of my 10k race. I woke up yesterday with a sore ankle, rested all day hoping it would settle, but this morning it’s just as bad. As gutted as I am, pushing through would risk far more than missing one race — so I’m making the sensible call.

I’m still here to support Dij, but for me it’s a few days of rest, ice, elevation and zero running until Tuesday. After that, my 90k week begins, and next weekend is peak training: 48k on Saturday and 18k on Sunday. I need everything in working order for that.

This is part of the process. Training isn’t just about the big miles — it’s about knowing when to pull back, protect your body, and think long‑term. Today is one of those days.

If you’re training for something big, remember: listening to your body is a skill too.
