This was just one small part of a much bigger training session that involved practising free kicks, experimenting, adjusting, repeating and learning.

Watching my son work is a great reminder of how development is about so much more than the outcome. It’s the willingness to listen, the patience to practise, the resilience to try again, the focus to make adjustments, and the enjoyment that keeps bringing you back for more.

Those qualities matter in football, but they extend far beyond it. We can become so focused on where we want to arrive that we forget there is something incredibly valuable happening on the way there.

Every repetition teaches us something, every mistake gives us information, and every small improvement becomes evidence that the work is taking us somewhere.

As his dad, of course I’m incredibly proud of him. But one of my favourite things about these sessions has nothing to do with football at all. My favourite thing is that we genuinely love doing this together.

Whatever his journey ultimately holds, these are moments I’ll treasure - a father and son sharing something we love while he continues to learn, grow and show himself what he’s capable of.

No matter who you are, enjoy your work, embrace the learning, and trust the process.

Everything we do is an iterative process. We try, learn, adjust, and go again.

When things become difficult, the challenge isn’t necessarily a sign that we should stop. Often, it’s an opportunity to grow, to develop resilience, become better, and discover what we’re capable of when we refuse to give up.

That’s one of the many reasons I believe training in whatever form it takes is such a blessing. It gives us a place to practise perseverance, to experience setbacks without allowing them to define us, to make adjustments, try again, and gradually turn something we couldn’t do into something we can.

And each time we overcome another challenge, we give ourselves another piece of evidence of how we can learn, adapt, improve, and overcome.

Don’t just train, train for something.

Every exercise should have a reason for being there. Strength, power, coordination, movement quality - whatever the focus, the question should always be: how is this helping me move towards what I want to achieve?

This session was built around qualities that will be taken onto the track this weekend, with the aim of expressing those qualities at speed.

Progress isn’t about collecting exercises or simply finishing another hard session. It’s about connecting the work you’re doing today with the person or performer you’re trying to become tomorrow.

Have a purpose, train with intent, and keep progressing.

The work you do in private sets the standard for how you perform in public. Solo track sessions aren’t about rushing through the motions, they are about intention, precision, and alignment. Every hurdle mobility drill, every plyometric contact, and every sprint stride is an investment into moving better, getting stronger, and sharpening the mindset.

When you take the time to focus on the how and the why of your movement; you’ll build resilient mechanics that protect against injury; you’ll develop efficient athletic power, you’ll train the mental discipline needed to execute when it matters most; and you’ll find that you don’t need the perfect conditions or an audience to put the work in - you just need the commitment to show up for yourself and respect the process.

Take a window of time today to move with purpose, and invest in your body.

Different person, different goal, same principles.

Today’s work with my 10 year old son was about more than football drills. We’re developing movement, technical ability, decision making, and importantly, the ability to think about his performance and learn from it.

Whether I’m working with a young footballer, a track athlete or someone simply wanting to move and perform better, the principle remains the same: train with purpose, understand what you’re doing, reflect, and keep developing.

Performance is more than what the body can do, it’s also about how we think, learn and grow.
