On This Day. On 30th August, 1975, the first ever matches took place in the Scottish Premier Division. Alex Ingram became the first player of any club to kick a ball in that league. This occurred because our match at Motherwell kicked-off a couple of minutes before 3pm. Johnny Graham scored with a penalty in the 28th minute. Gregor Stevens levelled it in the 49th minute. The crowd was 5,115.

Ayr United 1 Morton 1. Statistically our chances of winning today were unfavourable. It is not a case of being wise after the event. Just check what was written in today's programme. Including today our last sixteen league fixtures at home to Morton comprise three Ayr wins, four Morton wins and nine draws. The overall updated stats for our home league matches against Morton are: Played 88 Won 41 Drawn 24 Lost 23 For 124 Against 93. Fourteen of the twenty-four home draws have ended 1-1 dating from 6th November, 1915, until today. Six of those fourteen have occurred since 2019 but the first six were spread between 1915 and 2000.

The table shows the state of play after Morton drew 1-1 at Ayr on 21st December, 1974. That was the season when it was necessary to finish in the top ten to qualify for the new Premier League in the season ahead. Hence the line.

On this day in 1910, Ayr United won their first competitive match 2-0 at home v Port Glasgow Athletic. No photo exists from that game, but three weeks later, a pre-match shot before a 2-2 draw v Vale of Leven (same XI) is the oldest team photo. Original image from Gary Halliday.
