I taught the first session on the applied karate principle of Meotode and how it fits into practical self protection.

Meotode (literally "husband and wife hands") is an ancient Okinawan karate concept emphasizing the cooperative, simultaneous use of both hands. It teaches that both arms are "alive"—one hand defends while the other strikes—eliminating static "dead hands" on the hip.

Its always a fun weekend with great people.

After almost 20 years, I’ve taken the decision to close Musashi Karate Club.

This hasn’t been an easy choice. The club has been a huge part of my life, and I’m incredibly proud of everything we’ve built together—every student, every lesson, every moment of progress and perseverance.

Initially, our goal was simple: to create a space where our children could train in the art of karate, to become a respected local club and to give back to the local community and help charities along the way.. I believe we’ve surpassed that by quite a margin. I feel incredibly fortunate to have taught thousands of students over the years and to have seen Musashi Karate Club’s reputation grow across the UK and raising almost £80,000 in the process for various charities and support groups.

One thing I am incredibly proud of is the standard of my senior students and their dedication and commitment to learning the art of karate in its original form—as a practical self-defence system. A group of my most senior students will be continuing their journey together, having formed a new group called Bujin-Kai Karate Jutsu. I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing them grow as karate-ka and continue to promote traditional karate in Scotland and beyond, with my full support.

Isn't that what every Sensei wants to see?

The reason for closing is also straightforward. My time is increasingly committed to work and other projects, and I can no longer give the club the time and energy it truly deserves.

That said, this is not the end of karate for me—far from it. If anything, I’m training more than ever and continuing to develop my own practice. I’m also really looking forward to focusing on teaching through seminars and private lessons, where I can share my experience in a more flexible and focused way, without the constraints of running a full-time club.
If you would like me to come and teach, please reach out.
(I am particularly keen to teach for charity seminars/donations.)

To everyone who has trained with me over the years—thank you. Your commitment, spirit, and loyalty have meant a great deal.

This is the end of one chapter, but not the end of the journey.

Our final seminar will be on the 31st of May where we are hosting Iain Abernethy, I hope many of you can join us.

Most important rule in karate-jutsu. Does it work….?

No sure why, but everyone in their journey encounters the trap that many fall into. It looks like progress, sounds like knowledge, and feels like involvement, but it is none of these things. It is all a distraction.

Not what colour your keiko-gi is, or not whether you wear one at all. Not whether you train barefoot on polished floors or in shoes on rough ground. And certainly not the badge on your chest or lack thereof, the brand of your gloves, or the name above the door of your dojo. These things may all have their place, but they are not the measure.

Karate-jutsu does not live in appearances. It is not found in long discussions, clever comments, or well structured theories by poeple who type well. It absolutely does not reveal itself in debate, nor does it bend to anyone's opinion. You cannot think your way into truth nor can you talk your way into effectiveness.... Wishing might help, maybe.

There is only one place where the question is answered, and that is under pressure, in struggle. When timing breaks down and distance collapses. When resistance is real, uncooperative and has serious intent. When your body is forced to respond without permission from your thoughts, that is where truth lives.... That is where illusion is stripped away, because you will fall back to your level of training. As the old saying goes, "You can only fight the way you practice" Miyamoto Musashi.

Does it work? This question is raw and unforgiving. It begins by not caring about rank, tradition, or intent. It does not negotiate.... It simply asks questions and reveals truth.

Remember the number one rule for karate is "TRAIN FIRST, TALK LATER", but the most important rule for karate is "DOES IT WORK?".

Because talking can sound like progress, but testing your training is the only thing that proves it.
