AYFL LEAGUE 1

Full Time Result:

⚽ Cambusdoon Rovers 3 - 1 Maybole ⚽

Tonight saw a midweek game on the grass at KG5 in the sun. The visitors to Ayr were a very good Maybole team, who the team knew would provide a great test for how they are progressing before Saturday's Cup Final.

The game started at an absolutely frantic pace, and for the second time in a week Rovers went behind very early on. A pass back was pounced on by the Maybole striker, who rounded Isaac Donald and calmy stroked the ball into the net for 0-1 on 3 minutes.

What was already a tough task had just become tougher for the team. For the next 7 or 8 minutes it was really end to end, with none of the 2 teams really able to impose themselves on the game.

As the half wore on, however, Cambusdoon started to win the physical battle and allow their creative players to start causing problems. In the 10th minute an excellent driving run by Harris Rae nearly saw Lukian Marii being played through, but he had strayed offside. 2 minutes later Lukian did get a shot away inside the box, but there wasn't enough power in it to trouble the goalkeeper.

The signs were looking more positive for the team, and Lukian nearly capitalised on a slack defensive pass when he nipped in front of the Maybole Centre Back and drove towards goal. His shot from just outside the box was straight at the goalkeeper, but it felt like the equaliser was coming.

On 26 minutes, that equaliser did finally come. The team won a free kick 35 yards from goal, and our Captain Hugh Swanson took charge of it. He hit a fantastic low shot which arrowed straight into the bottom left corner of the goal. 1-1.

The team were in the ascendency now, although Maybole did look dangerous at times on the break.

A good high press did produce one more chance just before half time. The ball dropped to Alfie McDonald just outside the box, but his volley went wide of the goal.

Half Time 1-1.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first half ended. The team imposing themselves physically on the game and starting to play some nice football while restricting Maybole to chances on the break.

In the 39th Minute Rocco Kerr received the ball from a throw in on the left and cut inside past a defender well. His shot unfortunately going wide of the goal.

As well as looking dangerous going forward, the team were solid at the back. Winning tackles, using their bodies well, and playing out from the back. Some very composed defending by Sam McLean on the 45th minute saw him really unlucky with a forward pass which saw Robbie Jamieson caught offside.

The pressure was starting to build as we looked to go ahead in the game. In the space of 3 minutes, we were awarded 4 corners. The first 3 by Alfie and Hugh were all very dangerous but dealt with well by the goalkeeper. But the 4th one... Wow. An absolutely wicked inswinging ball from the left by Hugh went over everyone in the box and straight in at the far post for 2-1.

It was nothing more than the team deserved for their effort and performance to that point. And for the next 10 minutes they continued to nullify any threat that Maybole posed.

In the 62nd minute it was time for another dangerous set piece. 25 yards out from goal, the in-form Rocco Kerr stood over a free kick. He seemed to wait an age for the referee to blow his whistle, but when he did what a strike! He hit an unstoppable shot into the top left corner of the goal to make it 3-1.

Maybole did try to apply some pressure in the closing stages, changing shape and going 2 up top to try and salvage something from the game. But they couldn't get any change from the defence, who saw the game out well with Aaron Neil in particular not giving them a sniff at goal (and even forcing a save from the Maybole keeper from a 40 yard free kick!)

A fantastic win for the team against a quality opponent shows the improvements that are happening week to week.

Referee's Player of The Match was Lukian Marii who didn't give the Maybole defence a minute the whole game.

Coaches' Player of The Match was Aaron Neil, who was a Colossus at the back for the team today.

Well done boys, and well done team once more. Onwards to the small matter of a Cup Final on Saturday 🖤🤍

Rovers are going to the Final! 🖤🤍⚽

Donsport Cup Semi Final

Cambusdoon Rovers 5 - 1 Ayr Thistle

A good victory in the end, in a game that was tougher than the scoreline would suggest. Both teams took a little bit of time to settle, which is understandable with a place in the final at stake.

The first real chance fell to Ayr Thistle in the 9th minute. Their striker was played through behind the defence and was beating dewon on goal. A brilliant recovery challenge from Cameron Smith kept the scores at 0-0.

This was a real warning about the danger that Ayr Thistle could pose, but it did seem to spur the team into action. The next few minutes saw 2 chances for us. The first a shot from Zacc Cunningham which the keeper held well, and then a nice move which sent Robbie Jamieson down the right wing but his cross was again held by the keeper.

On 13 minutes, we did take the lead. Alfie McDonald's delivery is usually on the button, and it was another excellent delivery from a corner that lead to the opener. A great diving header from Rocco Kerr low into the net giving the keeper no chance this time from 1-0 Rovers.

This seemed to really settle the boys down, and we started to use the width of the pitch really well. A really good move down the left between Finlay Hunter and Alfie, and then 2 good moves down the other flank with Robbie and Zacc nearly bringing a 2nd.

On 28 minutes that 2nd goal did come. Some good movent in the box by Rocco was spotted by Alfie, and a nice lofted ball over the defence found him well. Rocco's finish was inch perfect, bouncing in off the post to make it 2-0.

2 minutes later it was 3-0, and it was a first half hat-trick for Rocco. Some nice movement again in the box as he was played on on the right hand side of the box. He drove towards goal and struck well across the keeper to make it 3-0.

It was a deserved lead to this point, and it looked like the game was getting away from Ayr Thistle. But that wasn't the end of the s outing before half time, with a goal back for them just before half time. That dangerous ball over the top of the defence again, with their striker calmly rounding Isaac Donald and slotting home for 3-1.

Half time 3-1.

The 2nd half was a much tighter affair, with both teams looking dangerous on the attack. An overhead kick from Hugh Swanson which went just over, and a header from Kris Clewlow which hit the post were the closest we came to getting the 4th goal until the last 10 minutes.

In the 62nd minute, we did get that 4th goal. The ball was played through the Ayr Thistle defence, and looked like the goalkeeper was going to gather it safely. He chose to chest the ball, which proved to be a mistake as it fell nicely to Rocco to chip it over him perfectly for his 4th of the game. The resulting celebrations saw a 2nd yellow card for an Ayr Thistle player, making the task almost impossible from that point on.

The team used their numerical advantage to keep Ayr Thistle in their own territory for a lot of the remaining minutes. And a good high press resulted in a good 5th goal for the team. The ball eventually found it's way to Lukian Marii who got past his defender on the edge of the boys and drilled a nice low shot into the bottom corner to make it 5-1.

5-1 was probably harsh on Ayr Thistle who competed well for a lot of the game, but over the 70 minutes Rovers were the better team and deserved to progress to the final.

We wish Ayr Thistle all the best for the rest of the season.

Referee's Player of The Match was Zacc Cunningham

Coaches' Player of The Match was Rocco Kerr.

⚽ Cambusdoon Rovers 3 - Valspar 2⚽

Tonight's midweek Ayr Derby between the sides promised to be a good game, with both teams in good form going into it. And it certainly didn't disappoint!

To say Valspar came out of the traps quickly would be an understatement. In the 2nd minute, a ball down their right saw the wingers shot being saved by Isaac Donald, only for the rebound to fall to a Valspar player who slotted home for 0-1.

And just a minute later, they doubled that lead. A high press on the Rovers defence saw the ball being won back and breaking through the middle of the defence. A good finish into the bottom corner gave them a 2 goal lead after just 3 minutes.

The team didn't crumble, though, and started to play their way back into the game.

As we chased the game, a Hugh Swanson shot looped over the bar and a good driving run by Harris Rae from half way saw him shooting just over. But the pressure was starting to build on the Valspar defence, with only some long balls down both wings giving them some respite.

On 18 minutes, the pressure finally paid off. A corner from our right hand side was cleared but kept alive by some really good work by Finlay Hunter. He played the ball into Harris who drove into the box and hit a good shot which was saved by the keeper. The rebound feels to Zacc Cunningham, who shot towards goal. The keeper got a hand to it again, only to see it bounce beyond him and into the net. Rocco Kerr showing good football I.Q by walking away as the ball bounced towards him, knowing he was in an offside position and allowing the ball into the net for 1-2.

This really gave the boys the belief that they could get something from this game after the good start from Valspar. For the next 10 minutes they played some nice football, but Valspar defended well and still looked dangerous on the break.

On 29 minutes, we were level. And what a goal it was. Our Captain Hugh Swanson stood over a free kick almost right on the left hand touchline, 20 yards from goal. He unleashed an unstoppable curling, dipping shot right into the top right hand corner of the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance!

2-2 Half Time

The story of the second half was one of lots of possession, territory and pressure. The team were moving the ball well, fighting for each other to win possession back, giving the Valspar players no time on the ball.

Hugh had another free kick which was narrowly over the bar, and was involved in a really slick move where he backheeled the ball to Robbie Jamieson on the left, Robbie played the ball in and Rocco was unlucky with his header.

The pressure finally told in the 62nd minute. Some more good pressing saw the ball being won back in the midfield, and Zacc firing a good shot from outside of the box which the goalkeeper saw slip through his hands for 3-2. It was the only mistake he made all game, but the boys deserved their lead for their performance in the 2nd half in particular.

There were another couple of half chances in the closing 7 minutes, but no more goals. An excellent 3-2 victory over a good Valspar team who had that early 2 goal lead. Superb commitment from the team 🖤🤍⚽.

Referee's Player of the Match was our Captain Hugh Swanson, he was at his very best today and kept the boys' standards high as they chased the winner.

Coaches' Player of the Match was Harris Rae, with another all action performance from the big man in both defence and midfield today.

Well done boys, and well done team. Up to 3rd as things stand 👌
