The home side won the toss and elected to bat, and were made to work hard for every run. Askern’s 10 men delivered a collective performance built on accuracy, variation, and pressure. Despite Mexborough finding pockets of momentum, Askern’s attack ensured wickets fell regularly, preventing any single partnership from taking the game away.

At the restart it was a spirited and skilful chase, led by skipper Aaron Gillies and number 3 bat Jack Brown. Together the pair mounted a serious challenge that pushed the match deep into the final overs.
Askern began their reply with calm assurance, refusing to be rattled by the required rate. The innings was anchored by two standout performances:
Aaron Gillies (sponsored by J Roberts Design Ltd & Stephen Ashworth) struck 59 from 54 balls and anchored the innings by pacing the chase beautifully, rotating strike early before opening up later.
Ably supported by all rounder Jack Brown 55 from 49 balls a maiden half
Century for the club , Browny clubbed 7 fours and 2 sixes, providing the perfect foil to his skipper. Confident stroke‑play, clean hitting, and excellent shot selection meant Askern always had a platform. His boundary‑hitting kept the pressure on Mexborough’s bowlers.
Together, Gillies and Brown formed the backbone of the chase, however with both men departing late on the Askern lads ran out of momentum.
Other Contributions from Jake S 1 from 8,
Donovan Daley (Available to sponsor) 2* from 4 balls ,
Travis Race (Available to sponsor) 1 from 4 and Lewis Tinsley 1* meant Askern finished agonisingly short by 10 runs in the final over.
Congratulations to Mexborough who advance to the next round but plenty of positives for this young side to take away !
