Match Report 🏏

Sadly, just another reason to add to the list of why we're leaving the league....

We'll start with the 2s, who's opposition informed us they were unwilling to travel at 11:35 am, whilst our grounds team were putting the finishing touches to the track. 16 points to the 2s but a frustrating start to all at Manor Way waiting to play.

The 1s headed to Knottingley Town Cricket Club, having agreed an earlier start time to try to get the better of the weather. The Welly elected to field and in spite of the constant drizzle throughout, managed to get the hosts all out for 150.

TT (Sponsored by Top Tier Talentees) and Andy O'Grady (Sponsored by Established Sounds and Earth & Civil Groundworks) teamed up for a run out, as did Glen and Az (Sponsored by Stephen Ashworth and J Roberts Design Ltd).

The Welly batsmen and Knottingley fielders had 2 attempts at taking the field, the first being a failed effort after the umpires deemed it too wet to start play.

At the 2nd attempt, the Swans knew the weather may play a factor and got straight to their task of hunting down a revised DLS score. With the weather conditions remaining drizzly but consistent throughout, Az Gillies and Cory Deere (Available to sponsor) showed great intent, Az making 65 before being stumped, Cory being stranded on 42*.

Unfortunately, we suffered a somewhat farcical end to the event. With no change to weather or playing conditions and having seen Cory take 7 runs from the first 3 balls of the over to move us to within 8 runs of victory, the game was ended (with no prior warning), as both umpires left the field of play, despite Knottingley sportingly offering to change their bowler to allow a result to happen.

Despite assuring us that we could wait and see what the weather would do in the next half an hour or so (knowing we needed only 8 runs to win the game, possibly even less so with DLS taking into account lost overs), the umpires then emerged some 5 minutes later having got changed and abandoned the game for player safety (which if the case, surely should have resulted in an immediate abandonment).

Needless to say, we sailed on home very disappointed with the outcome.

With just 8 runs required to win, unfortunately the 1s have fallen victim to the weather and the game was abandoned.

2s take 16 points after Notton conceded the fixture.

🚨 🚨 🚨 T20 Day update!! 🚨 🚨 🚨

Unfortunately the tough decision has been taken to postpone this years Martin Towler T20 Day due to the weather forecast. This decision has not been taken lightly and has been taken with the safety of all our members at the forefront.

We will be looking to be back to normal next year 🤞🏻

We are still continuing our fundraising in partnership with Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support however and also completing the challenge we have set ourselves of 660 laps of our field on the last day of the season. With the Firsts not having a game on 12th September we will be at the ground watching the Seconds bring a curtain down on our membership of the Pontefract & District cricket league whilst completing the laps throughout the day.

All members welcome as there will be numerous refreshments available throughout the day!!

A tale of two men for the Welly 1s on Saturday, the Prince and the Goat.

Batting first, the Swans were disappointing with bat in hand, Cory Deere (Available to sponsor) and Josh Gillies (Sponsored by G & E Painting Services and MDP Electrical) both got starts, scoring 21 a piece before losing their wickets.

The main man of the piece was Sach Madapatha (Sponsored by Red Lion Sports & Music Bar) who dragged the Welly from 49-5 to 133, before being caught, making a fantastic 53.

In response, the Welly bowlers didn't find much early doors, with one wicket falling early.

At 85-1, the Swans had no right to even think about winning the game, but then came David Longley (Sponsored by Illman & Son Elite Landscaping ).

In just 6.5 overs, Dave ripped through the Pollo order, securing 8-19 for his efforts and securing the victory for the Welly! That spell now takes Dave to over 350 wickets during the play-cricket era for the Welfare.

The 2s headed to Glasshoughton, with a much changed side once again.

Bowling first, they limited their hosts to 169/7.

In response, only 3 of the Swans managed double figures. Josh White (Available to Sponsor) top scoring with 27*, whilst Lewis Tinsley (Sponsored by M.TowlerLocksmithservices) and Jake S (Sponsored by Kudos Brokers) both managed 17 before losing out.

💥🏏 Big hitting 1sts win away at Normanton but it’s disappointment for the 2nds at home 🏏 😢

The firsts went away to Normanton MIB looking to put right last weeks defeat on what was an interesting wicket to say the least. Thinking it was only going to get worse, captain Josh Gillies (G & E Painting and Decorating Services ) elected to bat after winning the toss.

Things didn’t start great for the welly. On a wicket that was doing just about everything imaginable, they found themselves 61/4. However the in form Adi Parker (JCS Plumbing & Heating Services ) helped see off the new ball and punished anything slightly short with trademark pull shots to the boundary finishing on 72 off 63 balls. Then came the innings of the day from Andrew Lunn (subsitesurveys) who hit a monstrous seven 6’s on his way to 74, not only breaking the spirit of Normanton MIB, but also breaking his bat in the process. He was supported by Tharusha Tilakarathne (Top Tier Talentees) in a partnership worth 128. Tharusha having his own fun smashing 45 off just 25 balls.

The fireworks didn’t stop there. Lee Mayberry (Martin & Co Doncaster) continued his fine form with the bat finishing on an unbeaten 34 and a late flurry from Danny Wardle (30 off 16) meant Askern reached an above par score of 345.

Knowing the job was only 50% complete, Glen Cruickshank (VerveSport) removed both the Normanton opening batsman on his way to 2 for 38. Tharusha was introduced to the attack early replacing Lee Mayberry and he took full advantage of the bowling surface picking up 4 for 44 including smashing the stumps twice with his famous quicker ball. Charlie Mundy (Martin & Co Doncaster) continued his fine form with the ball in hand following his return from injury, getting 2 for 31 including a fantastic Yorker clean bowling one of the Normanton tailenders. Normanton’s lower order started showing some resolve but Danny Wardle put that to rest, bowling 2 for 12 securing a dominant 196 run win for the welly.

The 2nds at home to Horbury Bridge unfortunately suffered defeat. Fielding first the usual opening bowling partnership of Thomas Webster (Earth and Civil Groundwork’s) and Gareth Williams (Steve Ward) got to work and put the welly in a good position, finishing with figures of 3 for 29 off 9 overs and 3 for 42 off 14 overs respectively. Bowling performance of the day though belonged to first change bowler Luke Taverner who finished with figures of 4 for 44 helping restrict Horbury Bridge to 144 all out.

Unfortunately though the batting innings never really got going. A nightmare start saw welly 4/4 at one point. Manny Bisby got a start going before falling for 18 after being bowled by Tom Womersley who finished with a fantastic 5 for 33.

Frustrations continued for the welly as Thomas Webster, Josh Illman and Gareth Williams all got starts with the bat but couldn’t kick on as the 2nds were bowled out for 72 in a 72 run defeat.
