After last months tightly contested Desmond at Drumgeith we knew only a 10/10 performance would see us through to the next round, and in the first half we nearly got exactly that. From the first whistle of the game we made our intentions clear, pressing the opposition high and being aggressive with first and second balls. This paid dividends as we created some chances early doors but failed to take them. After 18 minutes we were awarded a penalty after great work from Nairn on the left who found Wood in the box, he timed his run well and nicked in before the defender to win the ball and was subsequently taken down. Wood then stepped up to take the resulting pen but after sending the keeper the wrong way he failed to hit the target as he struck the post. We kept up our efforts on a day where it was plenty warm and soon had our opener, Jarvis Chalmers was given the freedom of the pitch to drive forward from left back before doing well to pick out Horner in the box, he set it back for WOOD and this time he made no mistake as he drilled the ball home, 1-0. Soon after we thought we had a second through Collins but he was adjudged to be offside, much to the bewilderment of both teams. We seen the half out but were left frustrated that we didn’t turn the screw.

After a rousing team talk from Willie Mcstay at half time, and a quick watch of the highlights from Thursdays Edinburgh Derby, we were back underway. The message was to kill the game and take our chances and we soon doubled our lead through HORNER, we committed a good number of bodies into the box for the first time in the game and it paid off as the ball fell to Horner at the back post and he tucked it away. We should’ve made it three minutes later as Horner again set Calvin Wood well for a shot but he narrowly put it past the post. We passed up a number of opportunities again and we knew if the opposition found a goal our profligacy could be once again punished for the umpteenth time already this season. We started to drop back and lose our shape, Riverside are a good side and if you invite them on they will score goals and so they did. Both goals coming through their number 12, who was kept quiet by Murray and Bastow thus far, who punished two moments of lacklustre defending. In all honesty going into the final minutes it only looked like one team would win it, and it wasn’t us. However we regathered ourselves well and in stoppage time created a couple of half chances as the game descended into something resembling basketball. Going into the final moments and after some ping pong in the middle of the park the ball fell to Oscar Gierada, he got the ball out his feet and fed through HORNER who done really well to get his shot away as quick as he did and fired into the bottom corner, cue some unreal scenes in the corner. There was only a minute remaining after this and we seen the game out.

For 60 minutes we were by far the better team, but once again missing chances nearly cost us. The boys dug so well to find a winner and deserve immense credit for doing so, they even got a fair play and well done from both members of the management team this week. The best bit about our last minute winner is it meant we didn’t need to f**k about with playing a replay next week. A complete shambles that replays are still in place in the amateur cup given the problems every league has with fixture pile up, even more mental when you consider the Junior and Professional cups go to extra time in the event of a draw, surely something Scottish Amateur Football Association needs to look at.
The man of the match didn’t even need a vote as Taylor Horner was outstanding throughout the game, even better considering he was playing out of position as a striker. He took both his goals well and set up Wood for the opener superbly.
The draw for the next round will be coming up soon and we will update when we discover our opponents. Hopefully a naughty away day in store for the boys. It’s back to league action next week as we face Carnoustie Panmure AFC in DD7.
