Across all lessons this week, we have been discussing and teaching WATER SAFETY.

Broom Swim School fundamentally believes in teaching children & their carers not only how to swim, but to be safe and respect the water too.

This starts from our youngest babies aged 4 months - all the way through to our oldest swimmers completing their Swim England Water Safety 3 Badges alongside their Silver & Gold Awards.

This is not just an annual event, lifesaving practices and the water safety code are revised every term, and we are always reminding our swimmers it is the most important session of the programme.

From learning how to safely enter and exit the water with your baby, to teaching toddlers and preschoolers basic pool rules, our swimmers build their knowledge and confidence step by step.

Skills include jumping into the water, rotating and returning to the wall (remembering that "the wall is SAFE"), floating on their backs, and signalling for help if needed.

As part of their water safety education, our older swimmers have swum in clothes to experience how it affects buoyancy, movement and stamina, reinforcing important real-life water safety lessons.

The Met Office has forecast rising temperatures this week, with parts of the UK reaching 28°C towards the weekend.

With exams finishing and the school term coming to a close, NOW is the time to talk to your teenager about water safety.

Worried they won’t listen? This guide shows you how to say it so they will.

Don’t miss the conversation that matters most.

If you get into trouble in the water, remember:

Float to Live. 💙

If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help. If someone else is in trouble, throw them something that floats.

How to float:
• Tilt your head back to keep your airway clear
• Keep your ears submerged in the water
• Relax and focus on your breathing
• Spread your arms and legs to stay balanced
• Gently move your hands and feet if needed

RNLI has great Float to Live advice on their pages.

Sallie, teaching daughters Alice & Georgina, as well as their cousin Peter, during the Summer Holidays, circa 1994.

The "On Tour" idea started in the 1980s, with Sallie travelling to customers indoor and outdoor pools to teach swimming lessons.

More than 40 years later, that legacy remains, as Sallie and Alice offer private swimming tuition for those with their own pools across the local area. If you have access to a pool and would like Summer Holiday Lessons for your family & friends, do get in touch!

We want everyone to enjoy going for a swim, but with more and more people heading to the water and tragic drowning incidents once again highlighting the potential risks, below is some key water safety advice to help keep safe around the water:

Know the Water Safety Code

🛑Stop and think; always swim in a safe place
🏊Swim in supervised, lifeguarded areas
🌊Enter the water slowly and carefully

Stay together 🤝
Stay within reach of others, and keep children in arms reach at all times

Float 🛟
If you fall in or become tired, float on your back, breathe, relax and call for help

🚨If you see someone in an emergency:

📞 Call 999 (If you're at the coast, ask for the Coastguard, if you’re inland ask for Fire and Rescue)
🗣 Tell the person in the water to float on their back, breathe, relax
🟡 Throw them something that floats
