Seeing our Sir Gordon Perry featured on : Caring Together must have been a proud moment for everyone connected to wheelchair basketball and the wider disability sport community. The series itself was created to highlight carers, support networks and people making a difference in challenging circumstances, which makes Gordon’s appearance all the more fitting.

For decades, Gordon has been one of those people who has quietly changed lives, opened doors, and helped build opportunities for disabled athletes across the UK. Many know the names on the court, but there are also individuals behind the scenes whose impact reaches generations, and Gordon has always been one of them. 🏀⭐

MALCOLM TARKENTER

It is with great pride that we welcome Malcolm Tarkenter into our Hall of Fame — a man whose life in wheelchair basketball spans playing, coaching, leadership, and global service to the sport.

Malcolm’s journey began after a life-changing injury in 1974 at the age of 17. He joined Oldham Owls in 1975, becoming one of the club’s earliest members and competing at his first National Games at Stoke Mandeville that same year. Shortly after, he joined Lodge Moor, where a twelve-year spell in Sheffield shaped his development and led to his first international honour in 1979, representing the Great Britain Under-23 team in France.

In 1980, Malcolm was selected for the Arnhem Paralympic Games, representing Great Britain with distinction. Between 1980 and 1985, his sporting excellence extended beyond basketball as he also represented GB in sledge hockey and sledge speed skating.

After moving to Oswestry in 1985, Malcolm became a founder member of Oswestry Wheelchair Basketball Club in 1987, alongside Sir Philip Craven — a club that later became RGK Celtics. That same year, he represented GB at the European Championships in Lorient, France, and helped the new club achieve fourth place at their first National Games.

Returning to Oldham Owls in 1989, Malcolm enjoyed the most successful spell of his club career. He was part of championship-winning teams in 1989, 1990, and 1997, and a key member of the 1995/96 league and cup double side.

Internationally, Malcolm’s longevity was remarkable. At 37 years old, he was recalled to the Great Britain squad that won silver at the 1994 World Championships in Canada. He followed this with European gold in 1995, and his proudest moment came in 1996, helping Great Britain secure silver at the Atlanta Paralympic Games.

Retiring from international play in 1998, Malcolm moved into coaching, playing a key role with the GB Women’s Team as they won bronze at the 1999 European Championships, and again at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games. He continued playing domestically for Oldham until 2015, while also serving as Vice Chairman for a decade.

Off the court, Malcolm became one of the most influential figures in wheelchair basketball governance. He served as Chairman of GBWBA from 2008 to 2016, later as Vice President of IWBF Europe, and gained both European and World Classifier qualifications. In 2018, his lifelong contribution was recognised with the IWBF Gold Medal Triad Award.

A fierce competitor, respected leader, and true servant of the game, Malcolm Tarkenter gave everything to wheelchair basketball — and more.
It is with the deepest respect that we induct Malcolm Tarkenter into the Hall of Fame, Class of June 2026.

BOB BHANIA

It is with great pride that we welcome Bob Bhania into our Hall of Fame — a figure whose impact on wheelchair basketball stretches far beyond the court through officiating, leadership, development, and lifelong service to the sport.

Bob’s journey began at just 8 years old with Highbury Hawks, a club founded by the great Tom Payne. Immersed in every aspect of the game from an early age, Bob quickly became involved in refereeing, coaching, and table officiating in both able-bodied and wheelchair basketball. Maintaining a close connection with Tom Payne throughout the years, Bob also supported fundraising efforts towards the Aspire Centre and helped support the next generation of players emerging through Bounds Green and the National Junior Games.

For more than 45 years, Bob has been one of the most respected and recognisable officials within British wheelchair basketball. Generations of players grew up with Bob as a constant presence at national competitions, where he organised referees and table officials while also helping educate young athletes by explaining decisions and encouraging their development within the game.

Bob’s officiating career is one of true distinction. Achieving international referee status in both able-bodied and wheelchair basketball — a rare accomplishment — he officiated at the Paralympic Games in Sydney and Athens, European Championships, and World Championships in Japan and Holland. He also refereed both the Men’s and Women’s European Finals in Hamburg and helped shape many of the modern rules still used within wheelchair basketball today, while also bringing experienced officials from the running game into wheelchair basketball.

In 1993, during severe financial uncertainty at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, Bob stepped forward alongside Eva Loeffler, Jean Stone, Gordon Perry, and BWSF staff to help form a consortium that contributed towards rebuilding and modernising the stadium, helping secure the future of one of the spiritual homes of Paralympic sport in Britain. Those closest to Bob often describe him as a man who never chased recognition, perfectly summed up when he simply stated: “It’s what I do, I get things done.”

Beyond basketball, Bob has continued giving back through charity work, disability sport development, and adventure activities. He supported the early growth of wheelchair rugby and has also summited Mount Everest multiple times, alongside climbing many of the world’s highest peaks. More importantly, he used those experiences to inspire others, taking disadvantaged young people to Everest Base Camp, Kilimanjaro, and other life-changing expeditions.

Bob has always been a respected and influential figure within the sport. At times, his honesty and willingness to challenge the norm may have divided opinion, but what has never changed is the respect he commands across wheelchair basketball worldwide. A leader, mentor, referee, and builder of pathways, Bob Bhania has dedicated his life to improving the sport and the people within it.

It is with the deepest respect that we induct Bob Bhania into the Hall of Fame, Class of June 2026.

JILL BRACK BROWN (née FOX)

It is with great pride that we welcome Jill Brack Brown into our Hall of Fame — a true pioneer of the women’s game, whose impact spans decades of dedication, resilience, and inspiration at both domestic and international level.

Jill’s journey into wheelchair basketball began at just 15 years old, introduced to the sport by her physiotherapist while she was a patient at Lodge Moor. What started as a simple “why not” moment quickly became a lifelong commitment to the game.

She was part of the formation of one of the first-ever women’s teams, The Wildcats, helping to lay the foundations for women’s wheelchair basketball in the UK. From there, she progressed onto the Great Britain pathway under the guidance of coach Tony Hooper, entering an era where nothing was guaranteed and everything had to be earned.

Representing Great Britain in those early years was far from easy. Players had to fundraise, fight for opportunities, and even qualification for the Paralympics did not ensure attendance. Despite these challenges, Jill and her teammates embraced every moment — travelling the world, often in difficult conditions, staying in whatever accommodation was available, but always united by their passion for the sport.

Domestically, Jill made her mark across multiple clubs, including Steelers, Runcorn Raiders, and Gateshead Reds, contributing to the growth and competitiveness of the women’s game across the country.

On the international stage, Jill’s career stands as one of remarkable longevity and commitment. She represented Great Britain at four Paralympic Games — Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, and Beijing — an achievement only a select few can claim. Over more than three decades, she became a cornerstone of the GB Women’s team, providing consistency, leadership, and experience at the highest level.

Beyond her playing career, Jill’s influence has been just as powerful. She has been a mentor, a role model, and a guiding presence for generations of female players coming through the sport. Her contribution has not only shaped teams but has helped shape the pathway for women in wheelchair basketball.

A pioneer, a competitor, and a true backbone of the women’s game, Jill Brack Brown has given everything to wheelchair basketball — and inspired countless others along the way.

It is with the deepest respect that we induct Jill Brack Brown into the Hall of Fame, Class of June 2026.

LES FOUNTAIN

It is with great pride that we welcome Les Fountain into the Hall of Fame — a man whose dedication to wheelchair basketball has spanned decades through officiating, coaching, mentoring, and service to the game at every level.

Les first entered the world of basketball in 1970 before becoming a referee during the mid-1970s. Alongside officiating, he coached both men’s and women’s able-bodied teams to league and cup success while also helping local councils establish new clubs and leagues. His passion for developing the sport was clear from the very beginning, serving not only as a coach but also as league chairman and officials secretary within local basketball structures.

Introduced to wheelchair basketball in 1980 by his close friend and mentor Brian Scowcroft, Les quickly became immersed in the game and soon became a regular figure at the National Games in Stoke Mandeville for many years. During an era packed with iconic players and unforgettable contests, Les officiated some of the biggest games in British wheelchair basketball history, including USA vs Canada in the early 1990s as an international referee candidate — a game remembered for a packed arena erupting after he correctly called a technical foul for lifting during a tense moment on the free throw line.

Les later achieved his international referee licence and would go on to officiate across Europe, Japan, Israel, Australia, and the United States, including travelling with the GB Men’s team in 2000. Along the way he refereed major tournaments, finals, televised events, and the inaugural BIG8 tournament in Sheffield, working alongside some of the very best players the sport has ever produced. He also fondly recalls televised events at Crystal Palace featuring the legendary Alton Byrd and meeting the Duke of Kent during exhibition events promoting wheelchair basketball.

Beyond the whistle, Les became one of the sport’s great mentors for officials throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He helped organise referee courses around the country, mentored countless developing officials, and was known for always making time for younger referees. His philosophy was simple — never carry one game into the next, always communicate with players, and constantly keep learning. That desire to better understand the sport even saw him train with RGK Telford Celtics for a season and spend time coaching alongside wheelchair basketball teams in practice environments.

Les also regularly gave up his own free time to support Great Britain Men’s camps, helping provide officiating standards and guidance to elite players during training environments. Even after moving to Australia in 2010 with his then wife Nu, a five-time Paralympian for Germany, Les continued refereeing within Australia’s national wheelchair league while coaching able-bodied referees and supporting officiating development overseas.

Despite injuries, including a serious ACL tear shortly before the Covid period, Les has continued to stay involved in the game whenever possible, still officiating tournaments and mentoring referees around the country while balancing voluntary work in Asia. Through every era of wheelchair basketball, one thing has remained constant — his passion for the sport and his commitment to the people within it.

A referee, mentor, coach, educator, and lifelong servant to wheelchair basketball, Les Fountain has dedicated over half a century to helping the game grow both on and off the court.

It is with the deepest respect that we induct Les Fountain into the Hall of Fame, Class of June 2026.

A true servant of the game.
