We as an association could simply not exist without voluntary helpers-thank you to all who contributed in the past, present and hopefully in the future…. Please message us on here if it’s something you would like to take part in 👍 it’s great fun and a means of getting a reduction in permit price as we subtract £5 for every hour of help from the price. Thank you.

A GOOD AND INFORMATIVE WATCH AS USUAL FROM IOLO…..

Everyone seen this I hope? Iolo joined Dr Ben Wilson doing some electro fishing on the Tywi catchment with Iolo quite optimistic to hear that a few Salmon parr had been recorded…. Ben on the other hand seemed quite somber-saying that 🤔I don’t think I’ve seen the great man (Ben) smile 😁….

Ben went on to explain that the main problem with our rapidly depleting migratory fish numbers was an oceanic return % of juvenile migration of only 3% compared with around 30% back in the good old days …..
Now I know it’s a numbers game and we need our rivers producing juveniles at maximum but Ill let you do the maths….
But my question is this, what species of animal can prosper or even survive such odds- a migratory journey of only 3% return? Regardless of whether we improve their juvenile habitat to its absolute best.

TWO PHOTOS OF THE SAME LANDMARK BUT A GENERATION APART….WHAT HAS CHANGED?

Two photos of the Rheidol Valley, one taken today and the other from a postcard ..I’m guessing from the 60’s.

Probably the most obvious are the number of trees especially along the river, not a bad thing especially with warming temperatures- trees provide shade and shelter for juvenile trout when they grow in to the water . Why no trees before? The river banks look totally deprived of vegetation actually- probably heavy metals deposits preventing/supporting any growth?

Farm land or more importantly how the land was farmed? Land in the old looks more diverse, you can even pick out meadow land- summer growth was harvested late summer allowing grassland and wild flowers to actually flower.
The new- mono green Intensive farming …. multiple cuts of grass with relentless feeding with phosphate- no flowers in sight.

Ask your self what does modern farming practices give back to nature?

But you can also pick out some important SSSI sites - little pockets of oasis for nature 👌

Probably the biggest change ,is the unseen… the river looks and feels richer and healthier to be honest but with a very dramatic change- Migratory fish numbers!!!! Probably 5% of what it was during the time of the first photo….. let’s hope for better numbers as the migratory season is about to unfold 🙏

IS NATURE JUST DWINDLING AWAY IN FRONT OF OUR EYES ???

I don’t know about you but things aren’t as I remember… nature is in full bloom at the moment but as I walked along hedgerows scattered with bloom I don’t see much fly life…

I have lived in our family home for 50 years ever since my father self built it ,with a separate garage ,back in the 70’s and we have been blessed each year with a pair of nesting swallows in the open roof rafters.

It’s been ,without fail, a sign of summer in May to suddenly hear their relentless chatter and see them dive bomb in through the garage door , left open in anticipation .Over the years I have witnessed steady broods of 6 to 8 fledglings all in a line on the power line in front of the house and watched the young grow to near enough the same size as their parents as summer begins to turn in to autumn .
One of my favourite sites was to return after a session of night sea-trout fishing, park my bike in the garage and look up in to the rafters and see a line of them perched on one of my old rods looking down on my as if saying “should be in bed mate “.
But of late I have seen the fledgling numbers decrease dramatically - two years ago it was three and their growth…noticeable behind by the end of summer. Last year they nested but the parents were alone on the power line at the end of summer. This year for the first time no swallows have arrived back and it truly saddens me that I want be seeing them perched on my old fishing rod this fishing season.

NEW PATH FROM CAR PARK TO BOAT JETTY AT RHOSRHYDD……..

It is sadly becoming impossible to get funding for this type of project these days but the path in question was becoming a liability, being wet and slippery and on a camber. The club had to dig deep and come up with funding itself basically … a big shout out to Afan -Sand and Stone Glanyrafon who kindly donated a second delivery of stone free of charge when we ran out…. It is kind gestures like these along with volunteer work that keep the club going !!!!! Many thanks.

GREAT START TO THE MERRY MONTH OF MAY….. the relentless windy weather of late has finally stopped and it resulted in a practical flat calm on our lakes today .A good early morning hatch of black midge was evident with a lot of fish mopping up adults and shucks especially on Rhosrhydd, where a lot of large browns could be seen slowly cruising along with their top fins out of the water- quite magical!

Best two fish out of the many fish caught are pictured- one off the boat from Rhosrhydd and the other off the bank at Oerfa.

A TRIPLE SLAM OFF FRONGOCH TODAY….. ..
A native brown, over winter rainbow and Blue all safely returned to the rod of committee member Ben Ling during the warmest part of the day. Only black midge and the occasional Alder fly was to be see on the water but it’s early days… they are looking up to the surface anyway.
The Blue went like a train was the feedback from Ben … they certainly are fit fish and seem to return back well…. just a reminder that they are strictly catch and release with the plan to stock them twice a season with the hope that they will build up in numbers within a couple of seasons offering great sport for all !!!

OUR UPLAND LAKES BEING STOCKED WITH BEAUTIFUL BROWNIES……

As part of our fish stock management we stock some of our lakes with 50 brown trout twice a season .Our lakes have a good stock of native browns anyway as well as grown on fish up to 6lb from previous stockings….these stocked fish are a precious commodity costing us over £10 a fish these days, yes the cost of living crisis effects everything!!!
