Abbey Dore Yoga Retreat and The Golden Valley 28/6/26

A lovely, relaxing day in one of my favourite parts of Herefordshire on a day’s yoga retreat with Katrina and 6 others most of who were Katrina’s Yoga students.

We had a morning of yoga, something I’ve never experienced before and I’m glad I gave it a go as it was quite fun! There were lots of positions I got my body into that not even I knew I could do! We finished up for the morning with a little relaxing sound meditation before a lunch break

The afternoon was all about the sounds of the 7 chakras which we took over into the grounds of Dore Abbey. It felt really humbling to be in the grounds in each other’s company and not saying a word as we made the quiet space ours and got to be present in our surroundings. We finished the retreat with a little Kirtan before we said goodbye to each other

What a lovely, relaxing and very happy day. I came away feeling very de-stressed and like I'd had a good cleanse.

I finished the day with a good mosey around and exploring the beautiful area.

Hi Yogis 🧘🏼‍♀️
To all the attendees of my yoga thank you for attending over the last ( or more) it’s been a wonderful year and I have learnt so much and ready and excited for another year of yoga 🥰 we are now starting back in September. Details to follow.

For those of you that might ask about my time away on yoga camp, it didn’t happen as my car broke down. Good news time off have me space to prepare my own yoga, chant meditation space in new home and … I have a new car that’s reliable, clean and comfortable.
So I am feeling suitably relaxed 😎 and revived, and already busy at The Nook with therapies and attending Abergavenney Leisure centre for gym and swimming regularly, so all is well.

The classes will all be available
Abbey Dore at 3pm and 7pm Mondays.
Llandewi Rhydderch 10 am Tuesdays.
Pandy 9.30 Thursdays
Carlson Studio, Dance Blast 9.30 am Fridays.

There is also the retreat day on October 4th to look forward too.

Rest and restore with “The Cobbler”, good explanation and write up. 🙏

SUPTA BADDHA KONASANA

Rest. Release. Restore.

This gentle reclining posture opens the groins and chest, improves circulation to the abdomen and pelvis, and supports the healthy functioning of the abdominal organs. It helps relieve lower backache, varicose veins, sciatica, indigestion, and menstrual discomfort, while supporting healthy blood pressure and a calmer nervous system.

Support the knees with blankets or bolsters, and use a belt around the ankles and upper thighs to allow the body to relax effortlessly.

Stay in the pose for 15–20 minutes. The longer you remain, the more the body softens, the breath quietens, and the nervous system settles into deep, restorative rest.

Practise it daily—even when you feel well. A few quiet minutes in Supta Baddha Konasana can help you unwind, restore your energy, and reconnect with yourself.

Sometimes, the deepest healing begins when we simply allow ourselves to be still.

I am always interested in in how props work and add value to a practice.

Why add weight when the whole point is to let go?

In Viparita Karani — Legs-Up-the-Wall —
the practice invites release.

Letting go.
Stillness.
Quietness.

So a sandbag across the soles may sound counterintuitive.

But the reason is simple:
The feet have nothing to press into.

In standing poses,
the soles talk to the floor.

Pressure here.
Balance there.

A constant stream of information
the nervous system relies on.

When the body is inverted,
that stream changes.

The feet are in the air.

The brain keeps checking:
Where are they?
Are they safe?

So the legs may not fully let go —
not because the student is not trying,
but because the body has not yet received

the signal that says:
You can.

A sandbag across the soles
gives the feet something steady to feel.

Not restraint.
Reference.

A quiet, even weight that tells the body:
You are held.
You are here.
You can stop checking now.

This is not about forcing stillness.
It is about removing the reason
the body could not be still in the first place.

The quadriceps soften.
The ankles release.

The weight of the sandbag —
often around 2 kg to start —
replaces the weight of effort.

Then the pose deepens.
The mind,
having nothing more to solve,
turns inward.

So the next time you are in Viparita Karani
and the legs will not settle,

ask yourself:
What would happen
if something else held me?

⚠️ Skip the sandbag if you have ankle or foot injuries, circulatory concerns, or are pregnant. Learn new prop work under a qualified teacher.
