Match report – Ferndale Athletic vs Aberfan Girls
At Darren Park
Today’s game comes from Darren Park, where second-in-the-table Ferndale Athletic were expecting another comfortable afternoon… what they got instead was 70 minutes of organised chaos, crunching tackles, and an Aberfan side that absolutely refused to roll over.
Aberfan lined up with Caitlin in goal, a back line of Priya, Ellie, Ariana and Farah, Emelia and Emilie in midfield, with Betsy and Menna leading the attack.
On paper, this was a tough ask against one of the league’s strongest sides. On the pitch? Aberfan made it look like Ferndale were the team with something to worry about.
From the first whistle, Aberfan were right in Ferndale’s faces. Every ball contested. Every tackle fought for. Every inch earned. It quickly became clear that the home side were not particularly fond of a team willing to meet them physically and disrupt their usual rhythm.
Cue the soundtrack from the sidelines.
Every challenge? Apparently a foul.
Every Aberfan attack? Offside.
Every bouncing ball? Handball, obviously.
The Ferndale coaching staff and sections of the home support spent much of the first half attempting what could politely be described as an “alternative officiating strategy,” keeping constant pressure on the referee in the hope of influencing decisions and unsettling the Aberfan girls.
To their huge credit, our girls completely ignored the noise.
One early change in the first half saw Emelie making way for Kaci-Rae.
The opening goal came against the run of the battle. A through ball found the Ferndale striker in what looked suspiciously like an offside position, but with the flag staying down, the striker finished well.
1–0 Ferndale.
Heads dropped? Not a chance.
Aberfan regrouped immediately and went straight back to work, continuing to deny Ferndale the space and freedom they’ve clearly become accustomed to this season.
At half time, it remained 1–0, but the mood was clear: this was far from over.
No change for the second half:
And what followed was less a football match and more a full-contact statement of intent.
Ellie and Ariana were colossal at the back, throwing themselves into challenges, winning physical battles, and making sure Ferndale’s forwards earned absolutely everything.
Kaci-Rae slotted in superbly, adding fresh energy and composure, while Emelia Williams continued to drive the midfield battle with relentless determination.
Naturally, when you play this style, fouls happen. That’s football
What perhaps wasn’t quite as expected was the increasingly animated behaviour from the Ferndale bench, with repeated complaints directed at the referee throughout the match. Tensions eventually boiled over, resulting in a Ferndale coach receiving a yellow card, with the wider coaching team and sections of the home support formally warned by the referee regarding their conduct from the touchline. Despite the surrounding noise, Aberfan’s girls kept their composure superbly and stayed focused on the football.
Ferndale’s second eventually came from a well-struck free kick after one of those fouls, curling just beyond Caitlin’s full-stretch dive.
2–0. Ferndale
Game over?
Not this lot.
Aberfan rang the changes, with Talia, Isobel and Felicity entering for Farah, Menna and Ellie, bringing fresh legs but absolutely no reduction in intensity.
With Kaci-Rae dropping deeper and Ariana stepping into midfield, Ferndale continued to find themselves disrupted, frustrated, and increasingly rattled.
There were more thunderous (but fair) challenges, plenty more complaints from the home support, and one booking for Emelia after a tackle that perhaps landed just the wrong side of “robust.”
But through all of it, Aberfan kept their discipline, their shape, and their belief.
Yes, Ferndale kept probing. Yes, they wanted more. But Aberfan never gave them comfort.
⸻
This was an outstanding team performance.
Against one of the league’s strongest sides, away from home, Aberfan didn’t just compete, they imposed themselves.
Standout performances:
⭐ Ellie – immense at the back, fearless in every challenge, fully deserved Player of the Match
⭐ Kaci-Rae – excellent impact off the bench, calm, composed, and adaptable
⭐ Betsy – relentless work rate up front
⭐ Ariana – outstanding defensively and equally effective stepping into midfield
⭐ Emelia Williams – midfield warrior, set the tone physically all game
And a special mention for Caitlin, whose handling and bravery kept Aberfan in the fight throughout.

Final Whistle
Ferndale 2–0 Aberfan .
But make no mistake, they were made to work for every second of it.
Next week, the return fixture at The Grove.
And if today was anything to go by… Ferndale may not be looking forward to the trip.
One final disappointing note. Grassroots football should always be about competition, respect, and setting the right example for young players. At the final whistle, Ferndale’s coaching staff instructed their players not to shake hands with the Aberfan girls, a poor example of sportsmanship at any level, particularly in the youth game. Credit to our girls, who conducted themselves brilliantly throughout in what was a highly charged encounter.
We Go Again ❤️🤍❤️⚽️
