Right. I am going to tell you about something I use in my sessions that looks a bit odd and works better than anything else I have found.
The first time I did it, I felt absolutely ridiculous. I genuinely sat there thinking, what does this woman have me doing.
It worked. So I started to learn more about why.
It is called EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques, or tapping. You use your fingertips to gently tap on specific points on your face and body while focusing on whatever is causing you stress.
Research shows it can reduce cortisol, your primary stress hormone, by up to 43% in one hour.
The tapping sends calming signals to your amygdala, your brain's alarm system. You are literally using your own hands to interrupt the threat response.
Several NHS trusts now use it in their mental health services. Government health bodies in multiple countries have accepted it. The evidence is there.
But here is the story that really made me a believer.
During my training, we had to practice on ourselves. During one session I was working on some anger I had been carrying for years.
Midway through, I began to burp.
Yes. I BURPED.
Which promptly led me into fits of laughter and a very urgent need to visit the loo.
All of this is known as clearing. The body releasing what it has been holding.
After that session, I felt calmer and more relaxed than I had in a long time. Not because I had analysed the anger. Because my body had let it go.
I'll be sharing more about this in an upcoming group session. But if you're curious now, just drop me a message.
