WESTDYKE 2-1 GLENDALE
This time it was a late goal of our own that settled the three points as we picked up our first victory of the season in an excellent 2-1 win away to Glendale AFC.
The game was a close affair from minute one, with Glendale forcing the issue and us hitting them with pace on the break. The end-to-end pattern of play made for plenty of opportunities, but good defending from both sides kept anything clear-cut to a minimum.
We found plenty of joy with balls over the top of Glendale's high line, using the pace of Adam Whitehead and Alex Olmeda on the wings. It was that pairing that created our first goal on the half-hour mark when Olmeda played a ball through to Whitehead, whose strike carried enough power to hit the underside of the goalkeeper and still find the net.
The second half was always going to be a tough shift for us with only two outfield substitutes to bring on, so it was a big blow when Glendale levelled with 25 minutes still to play. A central free-kick was floated into our penalty area where it took a flick off the head of a Westdyke defender and nestled into the bottom corner.
Despite the setback, we continued to play with the same grit and determination that we had been showing all game. The fresh legs of Eli Kriston and Fraser Campbell made a huge difference in the middle of the park, with both making an impact in their competitive debuts for us.
Our persistence was rewarded just five minutes from time when Owen Walker found space on the right flank and fired a first-time cross into the box to find Cory Booth, who stretched to guide the ball in off the post.
As a team we showed real spirit to fight all the way to the final whistle to seal the win. We got no less than what we deserved and we will aim to make sure that feeling becomes a familiar one for the rest of the season to come.
