Last month, I had the great honor of being interviewed by the one and only .maalouf on her podcast Mosaic Identities.

In this segment, we touched upon how hard it is to convey our heartbreak as members of the Levantine diaspora, to those we love but who have no connection to this Land.

Micheline put me so at ease, that I share with her and now with you, the moment my husband who is French, finally understood the pain I feel in my flesh and bones in regards to Lebanon and the war and invasion perpetrated by Israel.

If you want to watch the whole podcast, comment "Mosaic" below, and I'll send you the link in your DMs.

You watch the evening news, and you recongnize your Land, your family.

What follows is a series of guilt-ridden and grief-infused reactions. I lay them out in this carrousel.

Tell me, do you feel this guilt too, and this without having a safe space to talk about it ?

💜 I am Dania, 🇫🇷🇱🇧🇹🇳 grief counselor for Arab & Diaspora, and transgenerational analyst. My therapeutic approach is both decolonial and spiritual. Online sessions possible. DM me for more info.

No, shock isn't always how grief starts, especially for those of us who come from the Levant.

Tell me, do you feel your grief is more connected to anger or to a form of resignation?

08/09/2026

1️⃣ I say "Yalla boukra habibi"("tomorrow love") ....and that ends up meaning I'll see you when I see you 😅

2️⃣ The classic "Hi, kifik, ça va"? is a daily thing

3️⃣ I still have a debate with myself each time I say "riz2allah" cause I still hear my Zahle classmates from when I was a kid say "sa2allah"

How about you? How can you tell me you are Lebanese without telling me you are lebanese?

06/09/2026

1️⃣ Feeling like you will never fully belong neither here nor there.

2️⃣ Finding yourself alternating between moments where you feel closer to your Arab roots and others where you feel disconnected from them.

3️⃣ Realizing your Arabic is broken and feeling ashamed when trying to speak it with those who never left home.

4️⃣ Dancing alone in your apartment, and realizing that something is missing because the collective is not there. Same for enjoying a ho**ah.

5️⃣ Being asked something about our culture and realizing that you don't have the answer and feeling guilty, because somehow it feels like you aren't a good ambassador.

6️⃣ Looking for a life partner and realizing you are either looking for everything you miss from Home in that one person, or on the contrary, you want to absolutely avoid aspects of our culture you feel are out of tune with who you are.

7️⃣ Wanting to go back Home, all the while knowing that your life here brings you joy and security, and never knowing what to do with this contradiction.

8️⃣ Going Home for the summer, and experiencing a sense of being complete followed by a form of disillusionment.

What else would you add to this list ? Tell me in the comments.

What if your taste in partners was determined by your feeling of being uprooted or homesick as a member of a diaspora?

The grief that comes with the feeling of being uprooted as an immigrant or as a third culture kid, can actually express itself in many different ways in our daily life.

Namely, in our love life.

👉 Listen to the whole video to learn more about how feeling disconnected from one of your cultures, grieving the ideal connection to your culture, can influence who you end up dating.

Conflict arises frequently among groups of people that just experienced grief or loss.

Why? Because we tend to expect from our loved ones to react the way we do when it comes to losing someone we loved, or losing the stability we had, or even a dream or project we shared. We want their faces to show the same tears, the same expressions of pain, anger, and choc.

We expect from our loved ones to feel in their bones the same ache that is eating at us. And when we realize they don't, not in the same way, when we understand that they don't miss the same things we do, and maybe even don't understand what our dearly departed meant to us truly, what they represented, then we feel betrayed.

The truth of the matter is each link is unique. No one will ever feel it the way you do. And this might feel very lonely but it is also part of the complex beauty of human relationships and of our emotional body.

So when you feel lonely in your grief because no one is grieving the way you are, I invite you to ask yourself: "was I able to honor whom or what I lost the way I wanted to, the way I needed to?" If the answer is no, or not completely, that probably means you need a ritual to ground your grief.

And if you don't know how to do that, I am here to help.

You're speaking, and the subject changes. Or someone jumps in with their own loss, their own story, before you even get to finish.

If you are experiencing grief, loss or dealing with trauma, you probably have found yourself in situations where you were trying to voice your truth, to put your pain into words and eventually you ended up realizing that you weren't actually heard.

That is why many of us feel that we are to stay silent while grieving or battling trauma. And we end up isolating and shutting people out.

👉 As a grief counselor & transgenerational analyst, I can tell you that absolutely all of the people I help report that they found it difficult to find a place where they didn’t have to worry about what they were going to say, if they were going to be a bummer, or even worse, a burden.

They all needed to find a place where it is totally safe for them to speak, and allow themselves to say the truths that were silenced. And to be actually heard, and validated. Not to be interrupted, debated, nor to have their feelings nuanced.

💜 This is what I offer. In every space I hold, in individual sessions or groups, you can speak your truth without censoring yourself, without filtering your vocabulary and without fear of being interrupted or invalidated.

What you feel is legitimate. What moves through you is not up for debate. This is why Listening is my number one value.

If you recognize yourself in these words, and you are looking for a safe space, don't hesitate to DM me.

🇺🇸 "It'll never happen."

We hear it every time, and it's meant to reassure. Well...it doesn't !

Because the harm isn't hypothetical, it's already here ! In the rhetoric, in the headlines, in the daily weight of being watched, questioned, dehumanized.

A law being "unconstitutional" doesn't undo the damage of it being discussed out loud, over and over, by people who want your vote.

This isn't about fear of what's coming. It's about a wound that's already open and bleeding.

💜 I am Dania, grief counselor & transgenerational analyst. My therapeutic approach is both decolonial and spiritual.
