First ascent. First free climb. 15 days on the wall.

Siebe Vanhee, alongside Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll and Symon Welfringer, has completed the first ascent of Tahu Rutum’s West Face in Pakistan’s Karakoram.

Their new route, The Leopard of Higher Ground, climbs 1,500m up the previously unclimbed west face of the mountain, linking the lower rock wall with the main summit spire via a series of steep snow traverses.

The team spent a total of 15 days on the wall, reaching the summit on day 13 and spending an additional 2 days
on the descent. A true blend of big wall and alpine climbing, the ascent demanded capsule-style big wall climbing; hauling portaledges, static lines, and supplies through complex terrain, while free climbing every pitch of the route.

'Big wall free climbing at high altitude was something I had been drawn to for a long time. After the experience on Tahu Rutum, I’m even more keen to push further into this style of climbing in the future...' - Siebe
