October is International osteoporosis month!
🦴 LET’S TALK ABOUT OUR BONES.
Having seen 3 of my female clients/friends experience a broken wrist, leg and shoulder recently, it seemed appropriate to talk about how to look after our bone health, and what a more appropriate time to discuss this than now. October is Bone health awareness month!
Our bone health. 💪🦵🦶
NOTE: Osteoporosis is very different from Osteoarthritis . See the definition below.
During and after menopause, declining oestrogen levels can accelerate bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. And osteoporosis can develop silently, without obvious symptoms, until a bone breaks.
A fracture is more than a broken bone. It can affect our confidence, mobility and independence, the very things we want to preserve as we grow older.
So, what can we do?
💃 Keep moving and build strength.
🧑🩰Practise balance to help reduce the risk of falls.
🏋♂️Practice resistance training.
🥬Nourish our bodies with bone-supporting foods such as,fish,leafy greens,nuts &seeds,tofu etc
🏥Know your risk factors and speak to your healthcare professional about whether a bone density assessment is appropriate.
Yoga can be part of our journey towards better strength, balance and body awareness. But for bone health, we also need appropriate weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise, and medical advice when needed.
Let’s not just focus on how we feel today. Let’s invest in the strength of our bones for all the years ahead. Growing older should never mean giving up on strength, confidence or independence.💛🙏💪🦵🦶
