Lovely film of a mother and her cub rubbing up against a tree and a good summary of the situation with the brown bear in the Pyrenees by Alain Reynes head of one of the main charities pushing for the reintroduction of more brown bears. There are now 120 to 130 bears at present so in terms of numbers they are doing well. But this population is the result of a reintroduction programme. Too many of the current population (90%) are descendants of one of the males and 2 of the females of the reintroduced bears from Slovenia. So in terms of quality the bear population is healthy but in terms of quality there is a problem. Lack of diversity in the gene pool. New blood needs to be introduced so more bears. Particularly more male bears.
