Glasgow Bound: Fijian Boxer Ben Maukakala Ready to Seize Commonwealth Games Opportunity

SUVA, FIJI — National amateur standout Ben Maukakala has locked his sights on a dominant ring performance as he prepares to represent Fiji at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, running from July 23 to August 2.
Competing in the competitive 65-kilogram division, the event marks Maukakala’s debut on the prestigious Commonwealth stage and his third time donning national colors at an international meet.
"It’s my first time at the Commonwealth Games, and I will try my best to apply the knowledge and training I’ve acquired to achieve a good result," Maukakala stated. "I want to show the world what I’ve learned and I want to give my best in the ring."
A Journey Built on Discipline and Sacrifice
Having laced up the gloves six years ago, Maukakala’s journey has been defined by steady progression. He initially sharpened his skills at Lal’s Boxing Club in 2020 before transitioning to Brave Boxing Club in 2021. Last year, he captured national attention after delivering a gold-medal performance representing the Police squad during the fierce Ratu Sukuna Bowl boxing competition.
The fighter notes that the rigorous demands of sweet science have completely reshaped his lifestyle, emphasizing strict discipline, weight management, and a clean diet—principles he believes are essential for the wider youth population.
"This sport will change the behavior and outlook of youths these days," Maukakala observed. "It’s a sport that can change youths and we have also learned self-defense. This sport can take you around the world if you are committed and willing to work hard with discipline."
Fueling the Fire from Afar
Stepping onto the global stage in Scotland presents a bittersweet reality for the 65kg contender. While his core support system will be backing him from the Southern Hemisphere, Maukakala is transforming the physical absence of his family into competitive fuel.
"It’ll be a challenge not having my family there to watch or cheer from the stands. However, that motivates me and I’m grateful to God on how far I’ve come."
He credited his parents and family for their unwavering support throughout his career, while thanking national coach Cam Todd for believing in his capabilities and handing him the selection opportunity.
The national boxing squad is currently fine-tuning its tactical and physical preparation under the guidance of veteran team captain Jone Davule, whose international experience has been vital in passing down technical ring strategies to the roster.
As the final weeks of training camp wind down, Maukakala has called on the nation to rally behind the team in prayer as they prepare to take on the Commonwealth's best.
