🔎 The footwork associated with the guards of the Bolognese fencing system is generally quite upright. It is common to see historical fencers advocate lower stances on the grounds that they improve balance and, consequently, fencing performance. While a lower centre of gravity can certainly be advantageous in some situations, it is a misconception to assume that lower stances are universally beneficial in historical fencing.

The popularity of deep and wide "combat stances" appears to owe more to modern expectations and popular culture than to the historical sources themselves. While low stances certainly exist in some traditions and contexts, the Bolognese sources generally favour a more upright posture.

In the Bolognese tradition, these higher stances are not an accident but a consequence of the method itself. They facilitate fast and efficient footwork, support the use of passing steps and angular movement, and allow the fencer to move fluidly between actions. At the same time, the high guards naturally close the lines to vulnerable targets such as the head and neck while keeping the legs further from the opponent's immediate reach, making attacks against them more difficult.

As with any aspect of historical fencing, the question is not whether a stance is high or low, but whether it supports the tactical and mechanical requirements of the system in which it is used.

📍If you are interested in understanding the Bolognese system beyond individual techniques and want to learn how the various pieces fit together into a coherent method of fencing, I can help through my Patreon.

The historical sources provide us with the material, but they do not tell us how to train, how to structure that training, or how to turn the material into functional fencing skill. This is where my work begins.

✏️Comment "PREMIUM STUDENT" if you would like information about my Premium Student tier, where I provide personalised feedback, guidance, and support for individual practitioners.

✏️Comment "INSTRUCTOR" if you teach, assist with teaching, or would like to start a study group and want information about my Instructor & Study Group tier, which is designed to help instructors and groups build a structured and effective approach to training.

The spear was one of the most important weapons of the Renaissance battlefield, yet it is often overlooked in modern historical fencing.

The historical sources provide us with the material: guards, strikes, thrusts, plays, and tactical concepts. However, the sources do not tell us how to structure training, develop skill progressively, or integrate the individual plays into a functional fencing method.

This is where my work begins.

Drawing on the historical material and years of teaching experience, I help students build a structured and practical approach to learning spear fencing—one that develops timing, distance, footwork, tactical understanding, and the ability to apply the material in freeplay.

If you want to learn how to use the spear according to the historical method, I offer two levels of guidance through my Patreon:

⚔️ Premium Student (€29/month)
For practitioners who want to improve their own fencing through personalised feedback, technical guidance, and structured training.

⚔️ Instructor & Study Group (€99/month)
For instructors and study groups who want to deepen their understanding of the material, develop a coherent training methodology, and build a structured spear curriculum for their students.

Whether your goal is personal development or helping others learn, the focus is the same: transforming historical material into functional fencing skill.

The footwork of the Bolognese fencing tradition is built around the lines of the Segno. Understanding how these lines function is one of the keys to understanding the system itself. They guide our movement when attacking and defending, helping us create openings while remaining protected from our opponent's threats.

Without the lateral movement provided by the Segno, many of the plays contain opportunities for double hits and after-tempo strikes. From a historical perspective, this is a serious problem. The Bolognese masters were not rolling the dice when they fenced—any landed strike could result in serious injury or end the encounter altogether.

Understanding the Segno is therefore not simply a matter of footwork. It is a way of understanding how the system creates advantage, maintains safety, and allows techniques to function as intended.

This is one of the areas I help my students develop, both in person and through my Patreon for those who cannot train with me directly.

If you want to understand the Bolognese system and the theory that underpins it—not just learn individual plays—there are two ways to work with me:

⚔️ Premium Student (€29/month)
For practitioners who want personalised guidance, feedback, and support in their own training.

⚔️ Instructor & Study Group (€99/month)
For instructors and study groups looking to deepen their understanding of the system and develop their teaching and training methods.

In Bolognese fencing, or historical fencing in general, the problem is not learning the plays — it is learning how to build and control the tempo in order to apply them functionally.

Unfortunately, the theory itself does not tell us how to train these things — only how they should be done.

This is where a structured approach becomes essential. The specific plays must be built into a dynamic training framework through drills, tactics, sparring, and functional application. That is what makes the difference between a collection of techniques and a functional fencing skill.

My Patreon tiers for Premium Student (29€/month) and Instructor & Study Group (99€/month) are designed around exactly this principle.

📍The Premium Student tier is focused on individual development through personal instruction and weekly feedback.
📍The Instructor & Study Group tier is designed for instructors, coaches, and groups seeking to build systematic and functional historical fencing training through structured pedagogy, curriculum building, drills, tactics, sparring, and interpretation methodology.

Comment “PREMIUM STUDENT” or “INSTRUCTOR” to receive more information accordingly.

Good day with two bachelor's party fencing classes. A bit less hard going introductory classes are always a pleasant change to the usual routine, especially when the groups are also interested in the historical context of the art.

Two different groups in the pictures. Points if you can guess the Lord of the Rings themed one.

Well done and thanks for coming, the pleasure was mine!

As shown yesterday, kicking is a part of historical fencing. In this case its a way to break the opponent's form and make them flinch.

I have just uploaded the first six videos of Marozzo's third assalto with sword and buckler to Patreon.

The video showing the first part of the first play, as featured in the video below, is a free lesson.
