Did you know Vilafranca de Bonany is so famous for its melons that locals hang them in strings from their doorways? On 6th September, the whole village celebrates this with one of Mallorca's most charming harvest fairs.

The Melon Fair fills the Plaça Major with live music, artisan markets, exhibitions and — the main event — a very enthusiastic melon eating contest. It's a brilliant, authentic day out and a lovely excuse to explore one of the island's quieter inland villages.

One of Mallorca's most theatrical festivals takes over the northern town of Santa Margalida on 5th and 6th September, and it's quite the spectacle.

The Festes de La Beata honour the town's patron saint, Santa Catalina Tomàs, with a spectacular evening procession led by xeremiers, demons, floats and a cast of locals dressed to recreate the life of this beloved Mallorcan saint. Children run through the streets dressed as devils, a few lucky girls are chosen to walk as La Beata herself, and the whole thing ends in the very best Mallorcan way — with food, w**e, music and dancing well into the night.

One of Palma's most cherished local traditions returns on 7th and 8th September, and it's a beautiful one to witness.

The Mare de Déu de la Salut fiesta fills the city with processions and floral offerings as Palma honours the Virgin Mary with a solemn mass at the church of Sant Miquel. Alongside the religious celebrations, there are concerts, theatre, sporting events and markets to enjoy across the two days.
