Hands down, this has to be the best moment of THE best day of my life.
For the last 4 and a half years, my main focus has been on improvement. Whether it be my fitness, heart rate, weight, my speech, or my memory. I've been trying to make each moment, each day, week, month, and year better than the one before. And wanting to be able to provide more for my WIFE, and my girls have been a driving force behind it.
This year, I have set my own goals. Goals that will help make this year better than the last. (Which will be very hard to do.😍😍) My strength and fitness being one of the priorities me.

Rome wasn't built in a day! ...but bricks were definitely layed everyday 😉

Step counts, calories/protein targets, workouts and performance goals all work on the same principle.

Start small! Brick by brick, step by step work on the areas you need to to acheive your goals. It soon adds up to be something you once thought unachievable.

My surprise birthday trip to Rome was inspired by my love of the film The Gladiator. A film I watched everyday for the duration of my stay in hospital, as each day I'd forget that I'd seen it the day before! 🙈

Incredible to think how far I have come in 3 years and I have to remind myself how hard I've worked to get back on my feet. All through daily baby steps.

We live in a world where people want things to happen yesterday, and we can all be guilty of being impatient.

Just remember that every brick you lay builds a foundation. Sure, there are complications and unforeseeable obstacles that pop up, but you can figure it out, make it work and keep building.

The important thing is never to give up. Rome, or your finished product, might not look like the original plan and that’s okay too! It means you adjusted to change and still saw things through. 💪💪

Remember to look back and appreciate how far you've already come!

You may not be where you want to be, but I'm sure as hell you've been in a worse place, mentally if not physically or both.

Here is me just 3 years ago relearning how to sit on swing.

I have had my fair share of tough times since my cardiac arrest and my mental and physical health has taken a kicking. Some days I didn't want to get out of bed thinking about what I'd lost and there were some dark days when I didn't know if I had the strength to keep going.

Looking back makes me proud that I got through those times and here I am with so much to be grateful for!🙏

So before you go beating yourself up because you've had a little setback, remember all the things you have already got through, the battles you have won, the fears you have already overcome and the strength you've gained along the way. Then brush yourself off and remember who you are!!! 💪💪💪

🤗New week! Fresh mindset?

You are much more likely to succeed with your health and fitness goals if you take things slowly and learn how to enjoy the process.

Stop going too hard too soon and stop being so hard on yourself. A positive mindset will give you a positive outcome!

🏃‍♂️Enjoy being active by doing something you LIKE to do, be it going for a walk, bike ride, open water swim, or a game of padel. Whatever it is, put that time aside and plan it into your week.

** Extra tip. If you plan it in with a friend, partner or family member you are more likely to stick to it ;)

Enjoy your workouts! Start with movements and workouts you enjoy and feel good doing.

Then set goals and challenges for yourself...but most importantly; enjoy the process!

There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that people who lead active lifestyles, and maintain muscle mass will more likely be able to put their own socks on and wipe their own ass in their old age! 👴👵

Aging well isn’t about trying to look young forever! it’s about living your best life and having the physical and mental health to enjoy it. 🏃‍♂️🧘‍♀️

❌ You DON'T need to be an obsessive gym wa**er to use one.

✅ It WILL help you understand what you are putting in your body each day.

👉You probably only need to use it for a month or so before you have a pretty good idea of your daily intake.

🔜Put the time and effort in at the beginning and then, like everything, it will soon become second nature and you will keep that knowledge forever!

Once you have mastered it, you just test and adjust when required!

❌It's not all about fat loss❌

The two main objectives with clients tends to be either fat loss or bulking up, but it's important to remember to focus on the journey not just a finish line. 🏆

So try setting yourself some performance goals too. Some milestones on the way whereby you can measure your progress. Set yourself a distance, be it running, rowing, swimming or on the bike for example and set out to beat it.

If you focus on the journey rather than the end game, it will 100% give your motivation a boost. ⚡

After my cardiac arrest my objective was to rebuild my cardiovascular capacity by setting small myself achievable goals.

So try setting yourself a goal today, meet it, and then look to exceed it. You can and will do better and it will make you feel good about yourself! Trust me on that.

👊Your perseverance and hard work will pay off and your attitude will reflect your results. So own it and enjoy the journey! You are your limit!

🙋‍♂️HANDS UP IF YOU LOVE SNACKS!!

The good news is, you are are allowed to eat snacks without feeling bad about it. 😋

Like most things in life, snacking is only a problem if it's excessive. You just gotta be mindful of the calories you are putting in each day.

If you plan your snacks into your daily calorie intake, then you can enjoy them guilt free.

For the snack monsters out there who know they snack excessively - Here are some tips to help.

✅ Eat larger meals - Eating more of the RIGHT foods at meal times will keep you satisfied for longer. Ie, Veggies and protein.

✅Drink water! Often people confuse being thirsty with being hungry. Have a glass of water before you reach for the fridge door.

✅ Get busy. People often snack when they are bored. So take the dog for a walk, or get on that job you've been putting off.

✅Don't buy it! If it's not there, then you can't eat it right? ...and stop blaming the kids; you should be teaching them healthy habits too! At the very least buy them the snacks that you are happy to leave alone. ;)

✅Prep! - Have some healthy snacks prepped in the fridge. A snack pot of yesterday's healthy meal or some chopped vegetables or fruit.

✅Clean your teeth!! It's not nice to eat after cleaning your teeth, so if all else fails, then try it. It works!

✅Say no!

It's ok to say no! To remove yourself from temptation. To say no to the biscuit, the dessert or the office cakes. People will try and sabotage you to make themselves feel better. Don't let them!

How I like to spend rest days 😎

So, why are rest days so important?

They allow your body to act on all the hard work you've been putting in!!

💪Rest allows your muscles to adapt, recover their glycogen stores and become stronger. You will minimise fatigue and in turn, prevent injury and avoid mental burn out.🤯

What can I do on a Rest day?

Rest doesn't mean zero activity! Make sure you still get your steps in to maintain your momentum. If you are feeling good, get some LIGHT cardio in too. Stretch, mobility, yoga are all excellent activities to make the most of your down time.

Wanna Netflix and chill?

That's OK too. Do what you need to do to relax and rejuvenate but be careful not to create bad habits and keep an eye on your nutrition.

When do I need to rest?

The amount of rest days you need will depend on the type of workouts you are doing as well as the intensity and your fitness level.

Ultimately, you need to listen to your body. If you are feeling overly tired, stressed, irritated and unmotivated, then it might be time to take a rest whether it's in the programme or not!
