🚨 BREAKING: The Canary Islands are officially out for 2026 — and the controversy surrounding the Israeli team has resurfaced.
La Vuelta will not finish in the Canary Islands in 2026 after all. What was meant to be a historic return—nearly 40 years after the race last visited the archipelago—has unraveled amid political tensions and a dispute over who would cover the multimillion-euro hosting costs. The renewed backlash over the participation of the Israeli team, now racing under the name Cycling Academy, has further fueled the collapse of the project.
👉 Gran Canaria says no:
Cabildo president Antonio Morales was unequivocal: the island will not contribute any funds to host a race that includes a team linked to Israel. He argues that the team’s owner has close ties to Benjamin Netanyahu and supports actions Morales describes as “genocide against the Palestinian people.”
For Morales, hosting the event under these conditions would make Gran Canaria complicit — a line he refuses to cross.
👉 Tenerife steps away as well:
After Gran Canaria’s rejection, Tenerife also withdrew. Covering the estimated €7 million cost without support from the other islands and the regional government is simply not feasible. With two of the key partners gone, the entire proposal has collapsed. Tenerife officials note that the “geopolitical landscape has changed,” but not enough to salvage the planned stages.

🏆 En 2023, Phillipsen obtuvo la medalla de bronce en el Campeonato Mundial de Ciclismo de Montaña, en la prueba por relevos, consolidándose como una de las jóvenes promesas del ciclismo internacional.
