Today is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM).
In the 🇪🇺 EU we have ZERO tolerance for FGM and ZERO tolerance for MYTHS about FGM!
Here are some common myths that need to be busted 👊 ⬇️⬇️
1️⃣There are NO circumstances in which FGM is acceptable.
FGM is a form of violence against women and girls.
It takes away control over their bodies, their sexuality, and their right to have basic bodily functions free from infections and pain.
In short, it violates their human rights.
2️⃣There are NO types of FGM which are less harmful than others.
ALL forms of FGM cause long lasting harm to women and girls.
ALL types of FGM affect the lives of survivors, with lifelong physical, emotional and psychological consequences.
3️⃣FGM is NOT a religious practice.
There are NO religions that make it compulsory.
It is linked to traditions and customs based on family history, country and/or ethnicity of origin.
4️⃣FGM IS a problem in Europe.
It is estimated that:
✅190,000 girls and women at risk of undergoing the harmful practice in 17 European countries alone
✅over 600,000 women in Europe are living with the consequences of FGM
5️⃣ FGM is NOT only “a woman’s issue.”
It is EVERYONE’s concern.
We will continue working with survivors, affected families and communities, experts, policy makers and NGOs to once and for all!
We will support the survivors and celebrate their resilience and strength!
And we encourage both MEN AND WOMEN to play a role!
