THE STEVE GILMORE MEMORIAL TROPHY
AN INVITATION TO ALL ALMERIA GOLF CLUBS AND SOCIETIES
On Wednesday 13th Feb our good friend Steve Gilmore suffered a heart attack and died on the 8th green at Desert Springs. Many of you will have known Steve and remember that almost the only time you didn’t see a smile on his face was when it was replaced by a look of fierce determination on the golf course. Stev
e was passionate about his golf and loved to play all of the courses in the area for the very individual challenges each one offers. During his three years as a Boxers member he played nearly all of the society days, winning the Order Of Merit twice, and was a permanent fixture in the league side when that was running. As an Englishman playing his golf in Spain, he decided to try to enjoy the company of Spanish golfers too as often as possible. He was a regular competitor in the open competitions at Alboran and other courses, and had joined the Alboran Spanish Seniors society. In 2012 Steve represented the UK in the Aguilon Ryder Cup comp and played in the Federation of Andalucia Seniors tour, which plays one tournament in every province. He racked up three third places, won the 2 day stroke play competition with the lowest gross score in the 2nd division, won their 2nd division Order of Merit and consequently was invited to play for Andalucia in a 2 day comp against Valencia. He loved to compete! The news of his death brought spontaneous donations from many sources to provide something to remember him by and his friends have decided that the most fitting memorial should be an open tournament that brings English and Spanish players of all standards together to promote and celebrate golf in Almeria province and Spain.
!!! Steve would have loved to have been part of it, especially if this taste encourages players to enter future tournaments. !!! Jose Ramon Espinosa, as the proprietor of Steve’s home course, has offered to host the tournament at ALBORAN GOLF and volunteered a weekend date to open the field to as many competitors as possible for a 09.00 shotgun start. This date has been set as Saturday 6th July 2013. HOW? The format will be a Stableford competition with three divisions for men and one for women, to be played for a major trophy which will reside at Alboran. The maximum handicap to compete for this trophy will be 36. Confirmation of handicap will be required – either by Federation licence or in writing from the Executive of your Society. Please note there will NOT be any slope adjustment to handicaps. PRIZES
There will be individual trophies for winners and runners-up in all divisions, with a treasure trove of other prizes on offer. The prize fund is growing and offers of sponsorship are already arriving. The many golf courses where Steve had made his mark are offering green fees and other prizes, there will also be a major array of golfing equipment and non-golf related prizes donated by sponsors or bought with sponsorship funds. THE COST AND WHAT YOU GET
To attract as wide a field as possible the green fee has been set at a spectacular €35, to include the cost of golf, trophies and prizes, plus a finger buffet with wine beer and soft drinks for the prize giving. This is a rare opportunity for players of all standards to enjoy the excitement of a major tournament, and to compete alongside their friends for a host of genuine prizes within their own division. Apart from the winners trophies there will be a card draw which will give all entrants an opportunity to win other well worthwhile prizes. PUBLICITY
The administrators of the tournament will be advertising the day as widely as possible in both the English and Spanish Press. SPONSORS
We are seeking further sponsorship from local businesses and individuals to provide additional prizes. This fund has already begun to attract donors. For publicity purposes there will be a generic “This hole sponsored by …” sign on each tee (example available) with room for own logo and/or other preferred details. A full list of sponsors will be displayed alongside each entry form and also at the club on the day. CONTACTS
