Instructor Call – Swords of the Renaissance 2026

For the first time, we are launching an open call for Swords of the Renaissance on August 29–30, 2026 in Potsdam.

We are looking for instructors for our break-out sessions.

Do you want to give a blackboard lecture on Destreza with compass and chalk, or prove your proceedings in the salle in the style of Fabris? Discuss modern sword simulators and how to make them, or talk about measuring originals in museums? Share practical teaching concepts, or reflect on diversity and safer spaces in HEMA clubs?

Then pitch us your topic.

We are looking for short, focused contributions of around 20–30 minutes related to Renaissance fencing. The format is open: practical workshops, lectures, discussions, demonstrations, or experimental training concepts are all welcome.

Sessions will be grouped into thematic tracks. Our committee will review all submissions and select contributions with the goal of creating a coherent and diverse overall program. We will get back to you as soon as possible, but please note that we may not be able to include every proposal.

Instructors will receive a ticket to Swords of the Renaissance.

Submit your short abstract/pitch here:

🇬🇧 Yesterday was ‘International Transgender Day of Visibility’, and I don’t usually pay much attention to these things, however, a post by my good friend Esko Ronimus - Traditional & Historical Martial Arts Instructor caught my attention, not because of what it said – a message of support, inclusion and normalisation of gender identity within martial arts practice – but because of the responses from a few hotheads, of which there were more than one might wish for.

Although we practise historical martial arts, our martial ethics must be those of the 21st century, not those of the past.

I am a white, cisgender, heterosexual, atheist man and a staunch left-winger. And in my palestra, there is room for all races, gender and sexual identities, believers of any religion, and democratic political leanings – obviously, fascism and Zionism, among many other aberrations, fall outside the definition of democratic political leanings –

Our palestras and fencing halls must be spaces for growth and freedom; I am quite clear that teaching ignorant and reactionary people how to handle a weapon is not the purpose of a decent martial art.

On the subject of transgender issues, I shall share a historical curiosity that appears in the book *La espada a dos manos y el montante* by Pablo Moya Montes, published by AGEA Editora.

Excerpt from the book (pp. 85–86)
"An even more singular case, and as far as we know unique in the Iberian world of the 16th and 17th centuries, occurred in Granada at the beginning of the 16th century, where a renowned certified fencing master had his school; he was a hermaphrodite and had lived his youth as a woman, but as he possessed outstanding skills in fencing, he was given permission to live as a man and take a wife.
We know of his existence because in 1525 the imperial entourage passed through the city."

Bibliographical notes (Viñas y Paz, 1949: 630–631)
‘When the King of France, a prisoner of His Majesty Emperor Charles V, passed through this town, he brought with him skilled and brave men, whom he had fence in his presence with the said master Esteban, alias Estebanía, against whom he fought with all weapons and wounded them, striking the first with his sword; and what was most remarkable about this woman-man’

"Estebanía was a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair. As a teenager, she stood out above all the young men of Granada in various physical activities she practised in public with them, especially in fencing, as none could match her. The astonished authorities had her examined by doctors and midwives, who found her to be a hermaphrodite; and, despite being beardless, she was allowed to live as a man and run her own fencing school."

This is a remarkable story, and could be used as an example of tolerance; however, it also contains a sexist bias – common in the 16th century but still observed in many quarters of the historical martial arts community. The sexist bias in question is that a woman could not naturally defeat many men; therefore, to restore everything to that ‘natural order’, Estebanía was ‘promoted’ to the category of a man, and in this way they were able to recognise Esteban for his full worth.

In short, ‘The palestrica arts are diverse by definition’.
