Fun fact:
I used to comb my hair back or right parting. 💇♂️
But since I’m about 18 I chose to be bald. 🧑🦲
Since I get asked that question sometimes:
Bodybuilding itself does not make you bald. The association mostly comes from a few overlapping factors:
* Genetics + androgens: Male-pattern baldness is strongly genetic and driven by follicle sensitivity to androgens, particularly DHT (dihydrotestosterone). (All men on my mother’s side of the family are baldies. Some just don’t want to accept it. 👴
* Anabolic steroids/TRT: Some bodybuilders use supraphysiological testosterone or other anabolic-androgenic steroids. Higher androgen exposure can accelerate androgenetic alopecia in genetically susceptible people. Someone without the predisposition may keep their hair despite high testosterone. (I’ve never taken anything that runs in that category)
* Age: Serious bodybuilding populations skew toward adult men, and male-pattern hair loss becomes increasingly common with age anyway. (Nobody would seriously argue that I’m old, so that’s no factor)
* Contest prep: Severe calorie restriction, rapid weight loss, psychological stress, or micronutrient deficiencies can sometimes cause telogen effluvium, a temporary diffuse shedding. This is different from classic receding hairline/crown baldness.
* Aesthetics: Some bodybuilders simply shave their heads once thinning begins because it gives a cleaner look and can make the head, neck, traps, and physique appear more visually imposing. (Gotta admit: I look massive 💪😄 No, but I actually look a lot younger and I’d say ‘fresher’, especially when I’ve just shaved my face as well)
So the stereotype is partly real, but the more accurate reason for me is:
“A pretty Face needs Space” 💪😄
